USCCB AND CCUSA URGE DHS TO WITHDRAW PUBLIC CHARGE RULE THAT WOULD HARM IMMIGRANT FAMILIES

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) are urging Catholics to submit unique comments to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by December 9, 2018, asking that they withdraw their proposed "public charge" rule.

On October 10, 2018, the DHS published a proposed rule on the "public charge" eligibility requirement that the federal government considers when determining whether to admit an immigrant into the United States or allow an immigrant to adjust status and become a lawful permanent resident (receive a Green Card).

Essentially this proposed rule is a wealth test, discounting the contributions of certain immigrants.  It will negatively affect many immigrant families -- making them face the terrible choice between accessing important health and welfare benefits and facing possible separation from loved ones. Implementation of this rule would also undermine general public health and life.

To submit comments, please go to the  USCCB/CCUSA Action Alert .
After clicking on the Take Action button, add your contact information, click Submit, add your comments on the bottom of the next page, and click Submit again. It is important to send a unique message in order to show DHS the diversity of comments in opposition to the proposed rule.

Thank you for helping to ensure that immigrant families are not harmed!
