USCCB Urges Congress to Reauthorize U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is asking Catholics to contact their Representatives and Senators to strongly urge them to reauthorize the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).

USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan agency doing vital work to monitor and report on the worst violations of religious freedom globally in countries such as China, India, Iran, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Russia, and Syria. In many of these countries, Catholics, Christians, and other religious groups face persecution that threatens their lives and livelihoods simply because of their faith.

The Catholic Church views religious freedom as a basic human right rooted in the dignity of the human person and critical to the health of societies. In 2022, Pope Francis said, "Religious freedom is a basic, primary and inalienable right needed to be protected everywhere."

You can read the USCCB's recent letters to the House and Senate calling for reauthorization of USCIRF here.

Please urge your representatives to support S. 3764 and H.R. 7025 which would reauthorize USCIRF and extend its modest funding through September 2026. To contact your representatives, please click below:
