Dear Colleagues, Alumni and Friends:

I am extraordinarily grateful and humbled to play an integral role in  USC Roski Eye Institute's mission of preventing vision loss and eliminating blindness. Our exceptionally talented team of physicians, scientists, trainees and staff is working tirelessly to make that goal a reality.  Our greatest advances would not be possible without teamwork and collaboration.

USC Roski Eye Institute continues to be at the forefront of innovations in patient care, basic and translational research, and clinical education.  Through the convergence of medicine and science, the end of blindness is in sight. I look forward to sharing many more updates with you in the months to come as we progress closer to our goal.

On Friday, June 15th, USC Roski Eye Institute faculty, staff, residents and fellows came together to celebrate the department's latest innovations across all subspecialties of ophthalmology.

The Cutting Edge: USC Oculofacial Plastic Surgery Surgical Skills Course
The USC Oculofacial Surgical Skills Course, organized by Dr. Sandy Zhang-Nunes, was a tremendous success bringing together the best of the best faculty, fellows, residents in oculoplastics, ophthalmology, ENT, and plastic surgery to learn from each other. 

ASOPRS (American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) fellows from around the country flew in to participate, as well as visiting scholars from around the world. The meeting of the minds was unparalleled, the equipment and technology available for learning was superb. Everyone left the course with new learning and practice to provide the best patient care possible!
ARVO 2018 Highlights
Our USC Roski Eye Institute team of innovators continues to work at the forefront of vision science, combining the most advanced retinal imaging and brain mapping techniques to gain insight into the relationship between eye diseases and the brain, develop nano-based therapeutics for retinal degenerative diseases, and use tears as biomarkers for the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. 

2018 USC Roski Eye Institute Laureate Awardee, Dr. A. Linn Murphree

Dr. Murphree was honored for all of his remarkable contributions to ocular oncology, most notably, for discovering the RB1 tumor suppressor gene. Congratulations!

2018 ASOPRS James A. Katowitz Pediatric Awardee, Dr. Jonathan Kim

Dr. Kim was honored for his longstanding contributions in pediatric oculofacial plastic surgery

2018 NANOS Pilot Grant Awardee, Dr. Kim Gokoffski

Dr. Gokoffski was awarded for her project titled, "Electrical Fields Direct Retinal Ganglion Cell Axon Growth by Modulating GTPase Signaling

2018 Wright Foundation Pilot Awardee,  Dr. Jesse Berry

Dr. Berry's project will be titled, "MYCN Expression in the Aqueous Humor of Retinoblastoma Eyes".

OTEP Students Receive California Wellness Grant
Our second year Ophthalmic Technician Education Program (OTEP) students were recently awarded with a scholarship from the  California Wellness Foundation . This funding will be used to help provide additional resources to enhance the OTEP program.
Brian Toy, MD, Will be Joining our Retina/Uveitis Service

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Toy will be joining us effective July 19th! Dr. Toy's professional interests include retinal imaging, telemedicine, and safety net care, particularly as applied to diabetic retinopathy. Outside of work, Brian enjoys hiking, skiing, and spending time with friends and family. Welcome to the family, Dr. Toy!
