USA HOCKEY DELIVERS SUCCESSFUL COACHING PLAN FOR ALL LEVELS
By Ross Forman – The elements of good, solid, successful coaching start from 8U to 18U and every stop on the hockey bench. From the West Meadows Ice Arena in suburban Rolling Meadows to the rinks on the west coast or others near the rolling hills of Kentucky, coaching carries many keys that push the good to be great and the great to be exceptional.
Being an average coach, anchored around old-school ways or practices, literally and figuratively, just doesn’t pass anymore.
Coaches can and should be successful, everywhere – and that certainly includes the leaders of teams in Illinois.
The season is upon us, finally, and the spotlight is certainly shining on our coaches, among others. The pandemic has been a slapshot to the stomach for everyone, but soon the games will be played, again, finally.
Players can’t wait. Parents can’t wait. And yes, coaches too can’t wait.

USA HOCKEY LEVEL 5 COACHES SYMPOSIUM
After four days of presentations, breakout sessions, fun and learning, the 2021 Level 5 Coaches Symposium concluded in Duluth. Coaches had an opportunity to not only engage with each other but to hear from guest speakers such as Jeff Blashill (Detroit Red Wings), Mike Sullivan (Pittsburgh Penguins), Don Granato (Buffalo Sabres), Ty Hennes (Skills Instructor for the Pittsburgh Penguins), John Hynes (Nashville Predators), and several head coaches of women's college teams, amongst others. I encourage our coaches (that are eligible) to attend next year's Level 5 Symposium.

Mike Sullivan and Natalie Darwitz Bring Extensive Resumes on Stage During Penultimate Day of Level 5 Coaches Symposium
Stanley Cups, Olympic medals and world championships – oh my! The amount of success that was on stage on Saturday at the 2021 Level 5 Coaches Symposium was nothing short of impressive.
Two-time Stanley Cup-winning coach and the 2022 U.S. Men’s Olympic Team head coach, Mike Sullivan, along with three-time Olympic medalist and three-time world champion, Natalie Darwitz, each gave presentations.
Darwitz, who was recently named the assistant coach at the University of Minnesota, mentioned how her dad helped her get into coaching, and Sullivan began his presentation by thanking the attendees in the crowd for what they do.

Level 5 Coaches Symposium Lessons Learned

“I love the player that competes hard and is a good teammate. That’s what excites me: when I can go into the locker room and see the players that really have earned a great respect in the room. And, day after day, they just grind through the season. That type of DNA in the players is remarkable. I love to see that.” - Boston College Coach Jerry York on what he looks for in a player

VIRTUAL CEP CLINIC SCHEDULE
CEP Clinics are being posted and are filling up extremely fast. Be sure to check the USA Hockey website, under the Coaches Tab, for available clinics. Because the clinics are virtual, you may register for any clinic listed regardless of location. AHAI and USA Hockey will be posting more clinics for October and November soon.
If you have any issues finding a clinic to attend, reach out to Jim Clare, AHAI Coach-in-Chief at jim.clare@ahai2.org and he will assist you. Again, due to the circumstances of this past year, clinics are filling up extremely fast. Do not get caught short in December by not renewing your certification soon enough. Please note: to register for a CEP Clinic, you must first renew your USA Hockey membership.
