The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process for US 281 gained significant momentum during 2013 with publication of the Draft EIS and Public Hearing. Based on public and agency comments on the Draft EIS, a Draft Preferred Alternative for analysis in the Final EIS has been identified by the US 281 EIS Team.

The Alamo Regional Mobility Authority (RMA) and Texas Department of Transportation
(TxDOT) will hold an Open House to present the Draft Preferred Alternative on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the Summit Christian Center. For more details, please read below.

Following the Public Hearing held on June 20, 2013, the US 281 EIS team reviewed public and agency comments on the Draft EIS and identified a Draft Preferred Alternative for analysis in the Final EIS.

The Public Hearing attracted 246 interested parties and drew 500 comments during the official comment period, which ended on July 3, 2013.

The Final EIS will include responses to comments received at the Public Hearing and at the May 8th Open House. It will also analyze potential impacts of the Preferred Alternative. The Final EIS will be available for public review in fall 2014. The EIS process culminates with the Federal Highway Administration's Record of Decision (ROD), which is anticipated by late 2014. If the ROD selects a build alternative, then the project could proceed with final design, right-of-way acquisition and construction. It would take about four years to complete the design-build phase.

The next opportunity to participate in the EIS process and learn about the Draft Preferred Alternative will be at the Open House on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Summit Christian Center. The Open House will allow for questions and viewing of project exhibits. No presentation will be given. Maps and other images showing the Draft Preferred Alternative will be displayed. Representatives from TxDOT, Alamo RMA and the US 281 EIS Team will be available to answer individual questions. We look forward to seeing you on May 8th!

Persons interested in attending who have special communication or accommodation needs are encouraged to contact Mike Chavez, TxDOT-ENV, at (512) 416-2514 at least two (2) working days prior to the Open House.
