CENTENNIAL
The Centennial Celebration was a night to remember!
Thank you to everyone who attended the Centennial Celebration last weekend! It was truly a night to remember, and an amazing way to celebrate 100 years of University Park. The drone show was spectacular, the performances were amazing, the food was delicious and the kids' activities were a hit! We would like to give a special shoutout to the Centennial Committees and City staff - the event would not have come together without their hard work. The 200th anniversary celebration has some big shoes to fill in 2124!
PARKS AND RECREATION
Goar Park renamed Centennial Park
At the April 2 meeting, City Council approved a recommendation from the Public Facilities Naming Committee to rename Goar Park to Centennial Park. This idea spurred from the Centennial Celebration Committees, who established a legacy project to commemorate the 100th anniversary, which resulted in a focus on Goar Park. In addition to the renaming, there will also be some park enhancements made to Centennial Park later this year.

Goar Park was named after William P. Goar. Goar served as the City Attorney for the City of University Park from 1946 to 1947 and served as Judge from 1944 to 1946, and passed away on August 16, 1947. The City Commission passed a resolution in September 1947 naming a park “William P. Goar Park.” While the park has been renamed, there will be markers installed recognizing William P. Goar and the former name of Goar Park.

Boy Scouts install flag retirement boxes in two locations
For their Eagle Scout projects, two Boy Scouts in the community have installed U.S. Flag Retirement Boxes in two different locations. One of the boxes, built and installed by Reid Johnson from Troop 518, is located on the porch of the UPFD fire station. If you are looking at the fire station from University, the box is located directly to the left of the fire bays and can be accessed 24/7.
The second box was installed by Connor Raney from Troop 82, and is located in the lobby of the City's Peek Service Center at 4420 Worcola. This box is accessible during building hours, which are Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Both Scouts plan to collect the flags from the boxes on a schedule, and will properly retire them. If you have any old U.S. flags that you would like to properly dispose of, bring them to one of these convenient locations! Thank you to Reid and Connor for your hard work on these projects!
Park Cities Recycling Event - Saturday, May 18
Save the date for the next Park Cities Recycling Event! The event will take place in the SMU parking lot on the south side of Burleson Park on Saturday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Here is another chance to clear out your garage, attic and closets of old financial and medical documents, outdated or unused electronics and even clothing and furniture. Friends of the University Park Library will also be on-site collecting new and gently used books for Second Chapter Book Sales (no textbooks, encyclopedias or damaged books, please). Be on the lookout for more information in future City publications!
Citizen of the Year search continues
The City is accepting applications for the 2024 Citizen of the Year Award. The City Council created the award to boost public awareness and appreciation for the many residents who work, often behind the scenes, to better the city's quality of life. Rather than acting out of a need for recognition, these residents are driven by a desire to contribute to their community. Whether beautifying our neighborhoods, increasing local opportunities for our youth, raising money for various worthy projects, or assisting those in need, all demonstrate an exceptional level of citizenship.

To nominate a resident of any age, click on the green button below. Nominations must be received by Saturday, June 1. A panel of residents will select the honoree the week of June 3. During July 4 activities in Goar Park, the honoree will receive a plaque and a special Citizen of the Year gift from the Mayor.

Nominees for Citizen of the Year must:

  • Be a University Park resident;
  • Have worked to improve the quality of life in University Park.

Current and former Mayors and Councilmembers are not eligible for this award. If you have questions about the nomination process, please call Paige Ruedy at 214-987-5686 or send her an email.

Recent Citizen of the Year honorees:

2023 - Brad Cheves
2022 - Melissa Rieman
2021 - Dan Branch
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Sign up to receive Code Red Weather Warnings
As we gear up for severe weather season, you may want to sign up for Code Red Weather Warnings.

Code Red Weather Warnings are sent when the National Weather Service issues a severe thunderstorm, tornado or flash flood warning. The geographically-based Code Red System determines if your address is in the direct path of the storm and immediately calls to alert you. You will not receive calls when severe storms are outside the path of your chosen address.

How do residents sign up to receive Code Red Weather Warnings?

You can sign up, free of charge, by clicking the green button below. During the application process you will be asked to type in needed information, including the phone number that will receive the weather warnings and the types of weather alerts you want to be notified about.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Prescription Drug Take Back Day - April 27
Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can dispose of accumulated unwanted, and unused prescription drugs by stopping by the Fire Station side of University Park City Hall at 3800 University Blvd. This effort, hosted by UPPD, is part of a nationwide drug disposal program started by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
A reminder - You don’t have to wait for a national Drug Take Back Day event to dispose of prescription drugs. The Police Department has a MedReturn box at City Hall. It’s located inside the building’s 24-hour entrance (3800 University Blvd.) next to the City’s 911 call center. The MedReturn box will not accept liquid medications, inhalers, needles, syringes or lancets.
