Dear Parent/Guardian and Senn Student:
Welcome to the 2017 – 2018 school year. I am proud to report that Senn High School is entering the year leading the Network in college enrollment rates, college scholarship dollars, IB Diploma pass rates, SAT attainment and graduation rates. Our Senn Arts program consistently draws critical acclaim in theater, music, dance and visual arts while our newly established Design program is entering its second year with a focus on student innovation. Our student enrollment continues to exceed projections and are we are excited to welcome our largest incoming freshman class in over a decade!
Although we are still dealing with a broken state funding system, our school budget was passed by the Local School Council and all necessary positions were added to support our continued academic achievement. Our active Friends of Senn organization has been working hard to raise funds for technology upgrades and increased access to devices for students. You will also begin to see changes in the look of our building, as we have recently partnered with the Chicago Park District and the 48th Ward to bring community programs and capital improvements. Senn’s significant development over the last few years is well documented and I believe that because of the collaborative structure we promote with teachers, students, parents, community members and local elementary schools, we will continue our unprecedented growth.

Senior year is an important and exciting year where a continued focus on GPA, rigorous coursework and attendance are expected. At the same time, seniors must also learn to navigate the many steps and multiple details of applying to colleges, financing the future and, ultimately, deciding what choices to pursue. In order to achieve these goals, we must maintain strong communication between school, students and parents. Here at Senn, we have many resources that will guide both parents and students through this exciting process. This is the time to take advantage of the talented counselors who are current on all the postsecondary expectations. Please make it a habit to check our website often (
www.sennhs.org) as the most up to date information will be posted there.
To maximize opportunities for students to finalize enrollment we have developed two different options for you and your student to register for the 2017 -2018 school year. The first option is to fill out required paperwork
online through FamilyID. See the attached “2017-2018 Online Registration” document for step by step instructions. Credit card payments will be accepted on the Senn website (
www.sennhs.org).
The second option is to complete required paper work and pay fees in person at Senn High School.
Available registration times (you only need to attend one and plan for approximately 60 mins):
Monday, August 28 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Monday, August 28 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Strong parent involvement is a proven support as one of the greatest predictors of academic success. Please ensure that we have the most current contact information, including emails, and make it a habit to visit our regularly updated website. I look forward to working with you this year as we continue to prepare your student for college and beyond.
Sincerely,
Mary Patricia Beck
Principal

Freshman Connection Service Project Showcase
|
|
|
The 2017 Freshman Connection program concluded on Friday, July 28 with a showcase profiling the amazing service projects that students researched, planned, and carried out. Each group created a poster explaining their project and reflecting on the process. Students also voted on their favorite service project. This year's winner focused on Immigration (pictured below). The groups goal was to change the narrative about immigrants by accurately reflecting their contribution to the community. The group learned about the history of immigrants from the Edgewater Historical Society. With this information they created a website that includes walking tours of the community, audio files/transcripts of immigrant stories, and the impact immigrants have made in the Edgewater community. The plan is for the website to be posted on several local websites. Check out their website below.

The Refugee group finished in 2nd place (pictured above). They collected gently used clothes and shoes that were donated to Care for Real, an Edgewater non-profit organization. In total they collected over 1200 clothing items and 47 pairs of shoes. They also raised $275.00 that was given to Refugee One, a community organization that supports refugees during their first few months in the United States.
Below are images from the other service that focused on the following topics: Anti-Bullying, Treatment of Animals, Access to Education, Homeless Veterans, Pollinator Gardens, Pollution, Protecting Monarch Butterflies, and Political Activism.
