It's Beach Season

Stay safe at the beach this summer with these tips from our Norfolk lifeguards:

  • Swim near a lifeguard
  • Use sunscreen and stay hydrated
  • Watch kids
  • Never swim in a storm

Enjoy the sun and surf safely!

Remember: Norfolk beach lifeguards will be stationed at Community Beach Park DAILY from noon until 6 p.m. through Labor Day.

Fund Your Project!

Is your neighborhood looking to fund a project? Our Block-by-Block Neighborhood Pride Grant Program offers civic leagues and neighborhood associations financial assistance to improve their neighborhoods one block at a time.

There are two categories: matching grants and mini grants. Summer 2024 applications will be accepted July 12 - Aug. 2.

Visit www.norfolk.gov/blockbyblock for information and the application.

To CUP or Not to CUP?

Our Planning Department recently hosted an informative workshop and seminar all about Conditional Use Permits.

This event provided an opportunity for our community to learn about the ins and outs of the CUP process, including timelines and costs involved.

NACC & IKEA Partner Up for Pets

IKEA knows how to put home furnishings together – they’re famous for their wordless, illustrated assembly manuals. IKEA Norfolk, Norfolk Animal Care Center (NACC) and Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center are putting something special together – families and pets. Throughout July, all adoptions are just $35 for our “No Assembly Required” adoption special.

To celebrate this special partnership, NACC's Waggin' Wheels will be at IKEA Norfolk (1500 Ikea Way) on Saturday, July 6, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Meet adoptable animals and learn about pet resources, opportunities to get involved and more. While you're there, check out some of IKEA's newest items for pets, and sign up to be an IKEA Family Member to get a special gift if you adopt from NACC in July.

Grow, Mow & Mulch!

According to the Virginia Cooperative Extension, the average lawn is mowed about once a week over the summer.

Before cutting the grass, remember it's illegal to blow clippings into the right-of-way. Grass clippings create a slick surface that's dangerous to motorcyclists and bicyclists. Grass clippings can also clog stormwater drains and contaminate streams and waterways with decomposing nutrients.

So what can be done with grass clippings?

  • Mulch mow and leave your clippings on the lawn.
  • Compost grass clippings to create organic soil.
  • Bag extra grass and place at the curb for trash pickup.

Visit www.norfolk.gov/yardwaste for more information and tips on how to be a part of the pollution solution and remember, only rain goes down the storm drain!
