AAP Changes Position on Breastfeeding for People With HIV

Accumulating evidence demonstrates that HIV transmission is rare if the parent is on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Therefore, the American Academy of Pediatrics changed its recommendations for infant feeding among people with HIV for the first time since the start of the HIV epidemic (Pediatrics 2024 May 20 June).

COVID-19 variants in 2024:

1. FLiRT Variants (KP.2 and KP.1.1):

  • A new, fast-spreading COVID-19 variant called KP.2 is currently circulating in the United States. It’s part of a new family of variants nicknamed “FLiRT” due to their mutations.
  • KP.2 quickly overtook the previous dominant variant, JN.1, to become the most common strain in the U.S. Currently, it accounts for over a quarter of infections nationwide.
  • Another FLiRT variant, KP.1.1, is also circulating but is less widespread.
  • Scientists are concerned that these variants may be better at evading the immune system due to their spike protein mutations.

2. Symptoms and Vaccines:

  • The symptoms of FLiRT variants are still being studied, but they likely overlap with typical COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, fatigue, etc.).
  • Vaccines remain effective against these variants, but booster shots are crucial to enhance protection.
  • As always, following preventive measures (mask-wearing, hand hygiene, social distancing) is essential to curb the spread of COVID-19.
