FAMILY MEDICINE PROUD

Remember, we are strongly encouraging everyone to show their family medicine pride during 2024-2025, our 50th Anniversary as a department, and adopt our zoom background and Power Point slide set. Links to these resources are at the bottom of Tuesday Talk in Department Resources.

Focus of the Week - Diversity

Jennifer Bradford MD, MPH; Director of Social Justice and Inclusion

Josephine Fowler, MD, MBA, Vice Chair of Clinical Services

HeatherLyn Haley, PhD, Program Director

The FMCH Diversity, Equity and Action Planning (DEAP) team is pleased to share the Diversity Statement:

Racism and structural oppression are immediate and ongoing crises affecting the health of our communities. Diversity, equity, and inclusion within our department are integral to addressing these systemic conditions.

UMass Chan Family Medicine and Community Health is deeply committed to working toward a more equitable and just environment in which all members of our department can thrive.

We strive to advance health equity, social justice, anti-racism and anti-oppression through critical inquiry and dialogue, education, research, and evaluation of clinical care, all while amplifying community voices.

Through celebrating our different lived experiences and building connections, we elevate and propel our department towards ongoing reflective action in pursuit of authentic connectedness, equity and justice.

We welcome your feedback and engagement with the DEAP team, which meets biweekly on Fridays at 10am. To learn more, reach out to any of our current members: Jennifer Bradford, Shahida Fareed, Josephine Fowler, Heather-Lyn Haley, Pratiksha Yalakkishettar.

In the upcoming weeks, the DEAP team will be rolling out a support system for learners, faculty, and staff who have experienced or witnessed acts of discrimination. The system includes an online support tool allowing people to share concerns and a protocol ensuring a timely response from ombudspeople trained to provide guidance to individuals as to their options for further actions.

Several community events this August highlight the diversity of Worcester’s residents.

The African Festival at Worcester City Common is happening on August 3rd. Worcester’s Fourth Annual Community Block Party will be hosted at the Worcester Public Library from 11:30am-3:30pm on August 10th. The 11th Annual Worcester Caribbean America Carnival will be held at Institute Park on August 25th starting at 12pm. Explore these options at more at our community health event listing.

Longitudinal Preceptors Needed!

With the next academic year fast approaching, Longitudinal Preceptors are needed for incoming students who apply to be MassAHEC Rural and Urban Health Scholars due to their interest in primary care and care for underserved populations. Students work with LPs for seven sessions in year one and six in year two.

More than 30% of these scholars have gone into Family Medicine due to the lessons learned during these early years of med school. This feedback summarizes it best:  “Working with my Longitudinal Preceptor has been one of the most enriching aspects of the program. …taught me to tailor my interviews to the patient population to better address their needs. …taught me the importance of interprofessional teamwork and integrating behavioral health into primary care. Observing how she collaborates with other healthcare professionals has emphasized the significance of a team-based approach to enhance patient outcomes.” If interested, please contact Linda.Cragin@umassmed.edu.

Anindita Deb, Associate Professor of Neurology and Director of the Global Health arm of the UMass Chan Collaborative in Health Equity (CHE) is requesting your collaboration to build a comprehensive database of global health activities occurring across our UMass institutions. Please (faculty, staff, and trainees) complete this brief survey which will take you 2-3 minutes. Thank you very much!
