Focus of the Week - Community

Hugh Silk, MD, MPH, Vice Chair of Community Health

Heather-Lyn Haley, PhD, Program Director

The Massachusetts Department of Mental Health released a report summarizing the past five years of tracking treatment of individuals with opioid use disorder in correctional settings. This report identified counties that have been providing different types of MOUD and the impact on community outcomes. The report concludes that individuals who received MOUD while incarcerated were more likely to continue treatment in the community and lower likelihood of experiencing overdose in the community or re-incarceration. Several students will look into breast feeding and post-partum support and the retention rates of these supports. In the coming weeks, students will be interviewed about their projects with Collaboratory entries highlighting their community accomplishments.

Be sure to check out Worcester’s Fitness in the Parks Series, a 12-week program hosted by the Department of Health and Human Services and Blue Cross Blue Shield, in collaboration with the YWCA and YMCA of Central Massachusetts. A wide variety of classes are offered in several parks across the city, ranging from Zumba to Yoga. Classes will run Mondays through Saturdays through August 31st. Longitudinal Preceptors Needed!

With the next academic year fast approaching, Longitudinal Preceptors are needed for incoming students who apply to be MassAHEC Rural and Urban Health Scholars due to their interest in primary care and care for underserved populations. Students work with LPs for seven sessions in year one and six in year two.

More than 30% of these scholars have gone into Family Medicine due to the lessons learned during these early years of med school. This feedback summarizes it best:  “Working with my Longitudinal Preceptor has been one of the most enriching aspects of the program. …taught me to tailor my interviews to the patient population to better address their needs. …taught me the importance of interprofessional teamwork and integrating behavioral health into primary care. Observing how she collaborates with other healthcare professionals has emphasized the significance of a team-based approach to enhance patient outcomes.” If interested, please contact Linda.Cragin@umassmed.edu.

Anindita Deb, Associate Professor of Neurology and Director of the Global Health arm of the UMass Chan Collaborative in Health Equity (CHE) is requesting your collaboration to build a comprehensive database of global health activities occurring across our UMass institutions. Please (faculty, staff, and trainees) complete this brief survey which will take you 2-3 minutes. Thank you very much!

Give Family Medicine a powerful voice! Participate in the medical school interview process to select the next generation. Multiple-Mini Interviews are 90 minute sessions done remotely using zoom. Each interviewer is assigned a brief “scenario” with a few follow-up questions and spends 8 minutes with 8 applicants. There is no preparation and a quick, 5 question, on-line form is completed about each encounter. Sessions are timed to have limited impact upon our daily schedules starting at 8:30 AM or 4:00 PM). You sign up for whatever number of sessions works for you. The training is at your convenience using a 30-minute, online module. This is a wonderful way to perform academic service. To participate, reach out to Brenda.Fusaro@umassmed.edu. For any questions or comments email me at Tracy.Kedian@umassmed.edu.

The next meeting of the FM POCUS Workgroup is August 15th from 7-8am. The workgroup has recently re-launched with an aim to improve collaboration around POCUS clinical and educational efforts. Please email erin.cathcart@umassmemorial.org if you interested in joining.

The Center for Integrated Primary Care is pleased to announce a new online training program developed by Amber Cahill and Jordan Howard-Young. Our Advanced Mental Health Care in Primary Care course is designed for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who are passionate about whole-person health care. This hybrid course is comprised of self-paced online modules and live online learning sessions that focus on addressing the complex mental health needs of patients seen in primary care. It offers practical training in screening, diagnosing, treating, and monitoring mental health conditions, empowering clinicians to provide better care and increase job satisfaction.
