Message From the Chair

As we approach the end of August, I want to call attention to a few items.

First, I am very pleased to share that Jeanne Cawse-Lucas, MD has arrived, joining the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health as a Professor and Vice Chair of Education. She will be practicing at Benedict and will rotate precepting of residents across our practices.

Dr. Cawse-Lucas is a graduate of UMass Chan Medical School, Class of 2006, and did her residency at Swedish Cherry Hill Family Medicine Residency in Seattle Washington. She also completed the University of Washington Physician Leadership Course and UW WWAMI Family Medicine Residency Network Development Fellowship. She stayed at the University of Washington where she held various positions including serving as the Associate Chair and then Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and the Theodore J. Phillips Endowed Professor of Family Medicine.

She has practiced in several sites in Seattle, including the Swedish Medical Group, Swedish Physicians Queen Anne Clinic, Swedish Hospital, University of Washington Medical Center’s Roosevelt Family Medicine Clinic, Montlake and Neighborhood Clinics. She served on several committees at UW, including founding the Department of Family Medicine’s Women’s Faculty Group, and participating in the department’s Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee and policy subcommittee. She has taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels with leadership roles in faculty development. Please join me in welcoming Jeanne to our department and UMass Chan.

Please also be reminded that Annual Required Education is due September 30th. This year, it is all accessed via Workday. On a positive note, there are more test out options. However, please plan ahead, as we are being told that there will not be an extension of the due date this year. And those who do not complete the ARE by the deadline will be suspended without pay. Details here.

Finally, please note that the UMass Ambulatory Research Consortium (UMass-ARC) letters of intent for PBRN pilot grants are due September 16th. Visit the website to learn more and apply.

Please save the date – October 4th for a memorial service for Jim Ledwith with his family. 5:30pm light refreshments, 6:00pm program in the Faculty Conference Room, University campus. If you would like to share a tribute, please contact

Pam.Tero@umassmemorial.org.

Focus of the Week - Community

Hugh Silk, MD, MPH, Vice Chair of Community Health

Heather-Lyn Haley, PhD, Program Director

With thanks to summer intern Naomi Dyer, we have made great progress on our compilation of mental and behavioral health resources for your use, sorted by type of resource first, then noting which programs are available state-wide, then region, town or practice site-specific. We’d love your feedback! Send Dr. Haley your suggestions and favorites to be added.

Save the date. The Worcester Healthy Baby Collaborative will host a community conversation about Worcester’s postpartum and newborn priorities on Monday, September 23, from 5:30-7pm at the Worcester Senior Center, 128 Providence St. Register here.

The Summer Community Health Assistantship has wrapped up, with 19 rising second year medical students working toward community goals. This year’s final poster session is virtual. Each student (or in some cases group project) has created an introductory video and poster which school employees can access by clicking here:

Give Family Medicine a powerful voice! Participate in the medical school interview process to select the next generation. Multiple-Mini Interviews are 90 minute sessions done remotely using zoom. Each interviewer is assigned a brief “scenario” with a few follow-up questions and spends 8 minutes with 8 applicants. There is no preparation and a quick, 5 question, on-line form is completed about each encounter. Sessions are timed to have limited impact upon our daily schedules starting at 8:30 AM or 4:00 PM. You sign up for whatever number of sessions works for you. The training is at your convenience using a 30-minute, online module. This is a wonderful way to perform academic service. Stacy Potts was highlighted on the UMass Memorial Health Watch on August 8th about the challenges of going back to school for both children and adults. She advised that focusing on healthy habits including school sleep schedule, exercise and nutrition, and getting needed supplies can ease the back-to-school transition. This was also posted on the UMass Memorial Health facebook page.

Tracy Kedian is the UMass Chan site director for a grant received in collaboration with the UC Davis School of Medicine entitled “Re-examining Admissions Practices: A Community Collaborative”.  Year one provides for innovation in admissions practices which promote diversity in medical school communities between UMass Chan and UC Davis. The second year involves dissemination to and collaboration with a broader community of practice with a goal of promoting social accountability in medical education.
