Do you know of a graduating medical student going into Family Medicine who stands out as deserving of the Annual Ann Nemitz Award?
The Ann Nemitz Award is given to a student in the graduating class who emulates many of Ann's values. The spirit of this award emanates from the way Ann Nemitz practiced medicine. Her guiding principle, from which all of her behavior followed, was that it was truly "a privilege to serve" others. She was a passionate activist for family medicine, particularly women's health and family-centered maternity care. Ann proved David Loxterkamp's words true: "First is the knowledge that doctors rise to their best by serving the least of the their patients - the least insured, the least curable, the least attractive, responsible, grateful. The least like us." Please send your response to Mike Ennis at michael.ennis@umassmemorial.org

Just in case you missed it! The information below can help answer questions about patient records (from a recent newsletter).
Patient Rights under HIPAA Policy – Right to Access
Our Patient Rights Under HIPAA policy informs workforce members of the many individual rights provided to patients and their authorized representatives under HIPAA. One such right is that UMMH will provide individuals (patients or their authorized representatives) the right to access and obtain a copy of their health information. If an individual requests access and/or a copy, they must submit a written request to the Health Information Management (HIM) Department, or for billing information, to Patient Financial Services (PFS). The individual should be encouraged to use our Authorization for the Disclosure of Protected Health Information form to submit their request. Additionally, they can access or request a copy of their medical or billing records via the MyChart patient portal. Access (or reason for denial of access) must be provided no later than 30 calendar days from when UMMH received the request. If you have questions or concerns about this individual right, please feel free to reach out to the Corporate Privacy Office at PrivacyandSecurity@umassmemorial.org or 508-334-5551. Don’t forget that you can access the policy, additional Privacy Office contact information, and other Privacy resources on our Hub page.
The OB Corner
From OB Leadership - Epic Updates
A few Epic updates to look out for in the next 1-2 weeks. Nothing major but very helpful:
1. Induction of labor orders will now automatically populate the EDD. We are hoping this same feature can be extended to several questions in the 1st-trimester screen, quad, and qnatal orders but that is a work in progress for now. This should be live by the end of the week.
2. Nitrous oxide eligibility criteria will only need to be ordered once. The hard stop in the order set will only be required if neither option has been ordered already. This should be live by the end of next week.
FM Peri Talk 001
Take the Oath, Teamwork!
Working collaboratively and keeping these key principles in mind can truly make a difference in perinatal outcomes. Here's a summary based on the T.E.A.M. approach outlined below:
T - Teamwork: Recognize that you're part of a larger team, including colleagues, parents, family, and support staff. Collaboration and interprofessional teamwork are crucial for providing the best care.
E - Embrace Learning: Encourage continuous learning and growth for yourself, your team members, and your patients. Actively listen to questions, experiences, and concerns, fostering an environment of shared knowledge and understanding.
A - Ask and Acknowledge: Ask questions to gain clarity and understanding, both from patients and fellow team members. Be receptive to feedback and acknowledge mistakes, using them as opportunities for improvement and learning.
M - Monitor and Mention: Continuously monitor progress and measure outcomes, utilizing evidence-based practices. Acknowledge the contributions of your team members frequently, fostering a culture of appreciation and recognition. By embodying these principles and fostering a "We" mentality, you can strive for better perinatal outcomes and ensure comprehensive care for patients and their families.
