Quick Notes:

  • Courts 5 & 6 are nearly complete. The har-tru courts are now open for play They are a still bit soft underneath from the massive spring rains, but should continue to improve with a bit of member play - thank you for your patience.
  • Ladies interested in playing on a 3.5 level senior team this spring, please e-mail umlytennis@umly.org as we are looking to add a 2nd team to the league this year.
  • Today is the deadline to return your signed contract and deposit to hold your courts for next year. Any slots not confirmed will be put out to the membership as available for contract for 2013.

Kings Corner:

Use the Entire Court

Most players are pretty good at moving their opponents from side to side in rallies, but they forget that they are playing on a rectangle. There is a lot more distance from the baseline to the net than from sideline to sideline. The singles court is only 27 feet wide. Most players, if standing at the serve hash mark, can reach the sidelines with their racquets by taking 3 steps. The court is 39 feet from baseline to net, so if you drive a player behind the baseline with a deep shot, a short angle with the next shot has the opponent sometimes charging over 40 feet. If the opponent gets that short shot on a dead run, then a lob is the perfect follow up. If you're playing doubles, it is even easier for opponents to cover side to side, but both players must make the full run from back to front. So practice your deep shots and short touch shots and you'll take advantage of the whole court!
