Funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Dr. Sherrilene Classen, professor and chair of the UF Department of Occupational Therapy, and her research team, conducted a study to assess the acceptance of riding in autonomous shuttles (ASs) among adults aged 50 and older. The study took place in Florida (Lake Nona, Port St. Lucie, and The Villages). Research results revealed an increase in acceptance after subjects rode in ASs but also shed light on challenges such as limited knowledge and distrust in technology. With Florida ranking second in the nation with a large senior population, it is important that mobility and safety are addressed among this population. The results and recommendations provided by the study's team will help FDOT develop educational materials and outreach to help older adults support the adoption of AS ride-sharing services as a viable mobility service.
