Parking is available in Garage 4 located on the corner of Museum Road & Newell Drive. Parking restrictions are lifted at 4:30 on weekdays and all weekend. From this garage, it’s approximately a 5-minute walk to the School of Music, the University Auditorium and Century Tower. Interactive map

Documentary Film by Cody Case Premieres at Hippodrome’s Inaugural Filmmaker Showcase May 9 | |
|
Cody Case’s documentary, Blocos Afro and Black Resistance in Salvador, Brazil, was selected to premiere at the Hippodrome’s Inaugural Frame by Frame Filmmaker Showcase. The film depicts Case’s ethnographic fieldwork with Carnival community percussion ensembles Ilê Aiyê, Olodum, and Didá, funded by a Fulbright-Hays doctoral dissertation research grant from 2022-23. Case is a Ph.D. candidate in Ethnomusicology at the UF School of Music and is currently writing his dissertation based on this research.
Showtimes are Thursday, May 9 at 6:00 p.m. and Friday, May 10 at 9:00 p.m. at the Hippodrome Cinema in Gainesville. Buy tickets here.

UF Brass Band Competes in North American Brass Band Championships | |
|
Members of the UF Brass Band participated in the North American Brass Band Championships hosted by the North American Brass Band Association in Huntsville, AL April 5-6, 2024. Musicians from brass bands around the country competed in solo and ensemble competitions. Our own percussion quartet — Garrett Young, Virginia Riva-Niccolini, Lucas Bradshaw, Ben Laufer — placed second in the percussion ensemble category and Morgan Skelley placed first in the baritone/euphonium slow melody category!
The UF Brass Band competed Saturday morning, performing their test piece, The Unfortunate Traveller by Imogen Holst, and choice piece, Corineus by Christopher Bond. They placed fourth in their division, narrowly missing third by 0.05 points.
The UF Brass Band is an audition-based ensemble composed of students of all degree-levels and degree programs. Please consider auditioning next Fall! Email for more information: dvantuinen@arts.ufl.edu

Musicologist Silvio dos Santos Speaks at UC Berkeley | |

Silvio J. dos Santos, Associate Professor in Musicology, was one of ten scholars selected to speak at the German Historical Institute’s Symposium Music, Knowledge, and Global Migration held at The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life at UC Berkeley on April 15-16, 2024. His presentation, Pervasive Stereotypes: Imagined Migrations of Indigenous Brazilians and Settler Colonialism from Spix and Martius to Heitor Villa-Lobos, is part of his current book project on the music of the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos.

Dr. Stoner Performs and Teaches in France | |

Dr. Kristen Stoner, UF School of Music professor of flute, performed a salon concert in Paris on May 4, 2024 featuring music by contemporary American women composers. She also taught flute masterclasses at the Conservatoire Jacques Higelin in Pantin, France on May 6, 2024, where she worked with students ranging in age from 8 to 40 years old.

Gator Marching Band to Perform in Normandy for 80th Anniversary of D-Day | |
|
The UF Gator Marching Band will travel to Normandy, France June 3-8, 2024. They will perform as the premier ensemble and parade leader during Défilé de Fanfares (Band Parade) June 7 for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. The parade route travels adjacent to Omaha Beach and will conclude with a standstill performance at Les Braves Omaha Beach Memorial, which commemorates American soldiers who lost their lives on D-Day. The Gator Band will also conduct a wreath laying ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery on behalf of the University of Florida with a performance honoring fallen American soldiers. Gator Band students are researching UF alumni who served during WWII and those who were part of D-Day. Family and friends of D-Day veterans are encouraged to share their stories by participating in the online survey here.

Dr. Sheridan Conducts Alachua County Elementary Honor Choir | |
On April 29, 2024, Associate Professor and Area Head of Music Education, Dr. Megan Sheridan, conducted the Alachua County Elementary Honor Choir. Over 150 fourth and fifth grade students from 17 Alachua County public elementary schools participated in the concert held at Trinity United Methodist Church. To prepare for the performance, Dr. Sheridan provided elementary music teachers with three professional development sessions across the academic year, culminating with a final session on April 28. Dr. Sheridan and the choir had the honor of giving the world premiere performance of I Want to Share My Joy with All composed by UF School of Music Ph.D. candidate in composition Jane Kozhevnikova. | |
Dr. Mosley Receives Honorary Linda Shaver-Gleason Award | |
Dr. Imani Mosley received an honorary award from the North American British Music Studies Association which will be presented to her this July at the organization’s biannual meeting at Oberlin College-Conservatory. The Linda Shaver-Gleason Award — named for the public musicologist and Mendelssohn scholar who was “assassinated by cancer” in 2020 — celebrates the work of junior and/or contingent scholars to the field of British Music Studies. Dr. Mosley is receiving a special honorary award alongside this year’s other recipients: “Dr. Mosley is one of the most active and influential public musicologists at work today, and her contributions enrich British Music Studies, but also transcend the field, having a wide impact on the reception of Western classical music in the public sphere.” | |
Ana Galdavadze Records Violin for Grammy Winning Artist | |
|
On May 6, 2024, Ana Galdavadze contributed violin parts to the forthcoming children's music album by the renowned two-time Grammy Award-winning children's ensemble, Sophia. Based in Mexico City, the ensemble enlisted Galdavadze's talent through a referral from UF’s Music Business & Entrepreneurship area. She skillfully overdubbed the entire violin section for the album's intercontinental orchestra, adding her distinct touch to this highly anticipated release. Ana is pursuing a DMA in Violin Performance with a cognate in Entrepreneurship.

16th Annual Sacred Music Workshop | |
The 16th Annual Sacred Music Workshop, organized by Laura Ellis, professor of organ, carillon, and harpsichord, was held May 5-7, 2024. Church musicians from Florida and Alabama joined UF students for a series of lectures and performances. Emily Amos, graduate student at Rice University, and Alvin Blount, Learning and Engagement Librarian at Georgia State University, served as guest clinicians. Session topics included fuging tunes, spirituals, entrepreneurship, a hymn festival, and a choral reading session. The Sunday and Monday evening organ recitals were preceded by short carillon programs. | |
2024 Commissioned Composer for the Guitar Foundation of America | |
|
After an international curated process, Dr. José Valentino Ruiz was selected as the 2024 Commissioned Composer for the Guitar Foundation of America’s International Conference Mentorship Program, an achievement he considers one of his highest honors. Ruiz submitted six compositions for solo classical guitar, each inspired by the wonders he experienced during his travels in Spain in November 2023: The Serenity in Sevilla, La Mujer Gitana de Sacromonte, The Silent Abbey of Granada, The Gardens of Alhambra Palace, Andalusian Roads, and Blues in Madrid.

Research Publication for Visually Impaired Music Entrepreneurs | |

On May 7, 2024, Dr. Chris Shelton and Dr. José Valentino Ruiz published their latest empirical research study titled "Sightless Success: A Portrait of a Visually Impaired Music Entrepreneur" in Berklee's Music Business Journal. The qualitative study explores the experiences of and provides solutions for visually impaired music entrepreneurs in navigating the post-COVID multimodal creative economy.

Derris Lee Received Prestigious Fellowship for Doctor of Philosophy Program | |
Derris Lee was awarded the Delores Auzen Fellowship to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Music Education with specializations in entrepreneurship, classical percussion performance, and music production at the prestigious Center for Music Education Research at the University of South Florida this Fall 2024. His scholarly contributions include numerous publications in national and international journals and forums including the Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education, International Journal of Music Entrepreneurship and Leadership, National Association for Music Education, and Association for Popular Music Education, among others. | |
Digital Entrepreneurship Residency at FAU & Israel | |

Denis Vasenin recently concluded a residency at Florida Atlantic University's College of Arts and Letters, sponsored by the Arts Performance and Entrepreneurship Initiative. During the residency, Vasenin led eight workshops on content creation, social media strategy for non-music companies and sole proprietors, and provided consultation for students' musical content as part of his doctoral research. Currently in Israel, he is developing video content for a range of clients, including local entrepreneurs.

New Publication on Legitimacy & Viability in Music Industry Education | |

Dr. Thaddaeus Bourne and Dr. José Valentino Ruiz published an article in the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), titled "Ensuring Legitimacy & Viability in Music Industry Education." In this work, Drs. Bourne and Ruiz delve into the challenges and limitations faced by higher education institutions in delivering music industry education with both "legitimacy" and "viability," which they define and analyze thoroughly. Flute Composition & Performance Wins 30th Annual Communicator Award | |
|
The Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts announced the winners of the 30th Annual Communicator Awards. Dr. José Valentino Ruiz's performance and contemporary classical composition, Highland Serenade for Solo Flute, which was produced and recorded by DMA student Denis Vasenin and Dr. Thaddaeus Bourne, received the Award of Excellence for Best Use of Music in Film & Video — the Academy's highest honor! Other 30th Annual winners this year include Kevin Hart, Cardi B, Apple, Austin Martin vehicles, National Football League, and Seqouia, just to name a few. Click here to watch the video.

DownBeat Magazine, the "authority for jazz, blues, and beyond," has announced the distinguished winners of its 47th Annual DownBeat Student Music Awards. Derris Lee earned the Graduate College Winner for Blues-Pop-Rock Soloist. Jorge Galvan received the Outstanding Performance Award for Blues-Pop-Rock Soloist. The competition also recognized Dr. José Valentino Ruiz for his mentorship in serving as producer of Lee and Galvan's submitted albums:
