June is Homeownership Month

All month we will be celebrating with our Take Root Milwaukee members and other community partners. TOMORROW June 1st HRI is hosting a homeownerhsip fair (scroll down for details) and we will be hosting two workshops for homeowners on Insurance (June 26, 5:30pm) and Estate Planning/How to pass on your home (June 27 5:00pm). UEDA Member Highlights

The finalists for the 2024 MANDIs have been announced! Congratulations to our finalist members: Community Advocates and Near West Side Partners! We also would like to congratulate our other community partners, including BizStarts, Community Development Alliance and the Hmong American Friendship Association. Thank you to our members who make these awards happen: LISC Milwaukee, U.S. Bank, Associated Bank, BMO Harris Bank, and JP Morgan Chase.


The Milwaukee Public Library was nominated for a Peabody Award. The Peabody awards recognize the best and most important public services in electronic media, focusing on television, podcast/radio, and streaming. Read about it here.


Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity is celebrating 40 years of service this year! Starting from humble beginnings in rehabilitation, they have completed a lot of very important work in our community since, and have big goals for the future! Read about it here.


WHEDA awarded $13.6 million in low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC) this month. These funds are going to development of affordable housing projects all over the state. Read more here.


Associated Bank and the Brewers Community Foundation are providing funds to 15 small businesses. $100K is being distributed through the Ethnic and Diverse Business Coalition and The Business Council for businesses that are owned by women, veterans, racial minorities, and members of the LGBT community. UEDA Community

The Social Development Commission suddenly closed their doors at the end of April. Unpaid employees and contractors, and those who rely on their programs, are still in the lurch. The Board is working to address the situation so SDC can get back up and running as soon as possible. Read about their next steps here.


Growing MKE has released their new draft plan. They are in the final stages before making final adjustments and adopting the plan! Feedback is being accepted through June 2nd, so get your comments in! Check out the plan here.


Marquette researcher Gabriel Velez is asking for young men of color to participate in a new study. This study focuses on how these men understand the current conditions of education, employment, and safety. Learn more here.


Vice President Kamala Harris visited Milwaukee this month. She spoke about President Biden's Economic plan and about how racism has a lasting and continuing effect on our economic realities. Read more about her visit here.


The NCRC has just released a report on the ongoing effects of redlining. This longitudinal study compiles HMDA data from 1981 to the present to look at racialized lending practices over time. Read the report here. They also released an interactive map to look directly at the dataset, which can be accessed here.
