Professors Kaaryn Gustafson, Ari Ezra Waldman and Kelley Fong Receive 2024 Law and Society Association Awards
Three members of UC Irvine's faculty were honored at the Law and Society Association’s 2024 Annual Awards on June 6, 2024, in Denver, Colorado. Professor of Law Kaaryn Gustafson (pictured left) won the Ronald Pipkin Service Award; Professor of Law Ari Ezra Waldman (pictured middle) co-won the Law and Society Association Article Prize; and Assistant Professor of Sociology Kelley Fong (pictured right) co-won the Herbert Jacob Book Prize. UC Irvine was the only university to have this many faculty honored at this year’s ceremony, underscoring the university’s interdisciplinary excellence and deep commitment to socio-legal scholarship and service.

After nearly 10 years as an actor, casting director, and producer in Chicago, Kanomé graduated from UC Irvine Law and moved to a new stage: the courtroom. This summer, she will relocate to New York City to work in the litigation practice group at Fenwick & West.

UC Irvine School of Law's acclaimed Immigrant Rights Clinic, directed by Professor Annie Lai, joined co-counsel ACLU SoCal, the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice, and Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, in a successful motion for summary judgment in the federal class action lawsuit, Kidd v. Mayorkas, vacating ICE's unconstitutional practice of "knock and talks" to conduct home arrests.

"This is a win not only for the organizational plaintiffs in this case but for the courageous individuals who stepped forward to tell their stories and the community as a whole," said Annie Lai, Clinical Professor of Law and Co-Associate Dean for Experiential Learning at UC Irvine School of Law. "We were honored to be a part of the broad coalition that challenged ICE's illegal home arrest practices."

Professor Ji Seon Song has been named a Hellman Fellow for 2024-25. Funding from the fellowship will support her research focused on “Crisis Policing.” Hellman Fellowships are bestowed annually to support research by promising assistant professors at UC Irvine.

The K-Law Forum explored "Contemporary Issues in Korean Law and Comparative Perspectives," and featured a keynote closing address by Judge Richard Lee. The Law School entered into a collaborative agreement with the Korea Legislative Research Institute and welcomed President Han and a distinguished delegation from KLRI.

Professor Swethaa Ballakrishnen and co-author Suryapratim Roy, Assistant Professor of Law at Trinity College Dublin, have been awarded a Law and Society Association Global Collaboration Grant for their research project, “Law & the Interloper: Comparative Projects and the Potential of Queer Theory.”

During the two-year fellowship, Sandra will serve as a staff attorney at Open Door Legal and Abby will serve as a staff attorney at Immigrant Defenders Law Center, providing high-quality legal assistance to low-income immigrants in complex immigration matters.

Prof. Mikkor will serve a three-year term on the Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) board beginning August 1, 2024. ALWD is one of the preeminent organizations dedicated to the advancement of lawyering skills teaching and scholarship.

UC Irvine School of Law's Criminal Justice Clinic, directed by Professor Katie Tinto, was honored with the 2024 Community Partner of the Year Award from Public Law Center at its annual Volunteers for Justice Awards Dinner on Tuesday, June 11 in recognition of post-conviction successes the clinic secured for PLC’s clients who are victims of trafficking.

Faculty News: Professor Christopher Whytock Awarded Best Publication Prize from Berkeley Law’s Civil Justice Research Initiative

Prof. Whytock, along with co-authors William Dodge (UC Davis) and Maggie Gardner (Cornell Law), received the Best Publication Prize from Berkeley Law’s Civil Justice Research Initiative for their article,The Many State Doctrines of Forum Non Conveniens,” published in the February 2023 issue of the Duke Law Journal. The award was presented at the Berkeley Law Reception of the Law and Society Association's Annual Meeting.
