On May 10, 2024, the University of California, Irvine School of Law held its 13th commencement ceremony, celebrating the graduation of 164 J.D., 25 Global LL.M., and 9 Graduate Tax LL.M. students. The event featured a keynote address from the Honorable Sunshine Suzanne Sykes, United States District Court Judge, Central District of California.
At least 25 percent of the J.D. class of 2024 were the first in their families to graduate college or law school. The graduating J.D. class participated in more than 13,000 hours of pro bono work during their three years of law school, and over 95 percent of the class participated in pro bono work. We are so proud of our graduates!

On April 18 the UC Irvine community gathered to celebrate Professor Joe DiMento on the eve of his retirement, and his 50 years of tremendous contributions to UC Irvine and UC Irvine School of Law.

UC Irvine School of Law's Criminal Justice Clinic, directed by Professor Katie Tinto, will be honored with the 2024 Community Partner of the Year Award from Public Law Center at its annual Volunteers for Justice Awards Dinner on Tuesday, June 11, in recognition of post-conviction successes the clinic secured for PLC’s clients who are victims of trafficking.

A delegation from UC Irvine recently visited South Korea to further enhance ties with the Korean legal community. During the trip, the delegation met with Law School partners, alumni, former visiting scholars, admitted students, and friends of UC Irvine.

Pro Bono News: UC Irvine School of Law Honored Outstanding Leaders and Service at Pro Bono and Student Life Awards Night
Congratulations to all the students, faculty and staff who received awards for their leadership, service and commitment to the UCI Law community during our 2024 Pro Bono and Student Life Awards.
- 95 percent of the class of 2024 participated in pro bono at some point during their time at UCI Law, one of the highest pro bono participation rates at the Law School ever.
- Six graduates completed more than 300 pro bono hours during their time at UCI Law.
- Eight graduates completed more than 500 pro bono hours.

Student News: Recent UC Irvine School of Law Graduates Argue Before the Ninth Circuit Circuit Court of Appeals
As part of our Ninth Circuit Appellate Litigation Clinic, recent UCI Law graduates Johanna Crawford, Mark Green, Alfred Hwang, Kanomé Jones, Ye Yong Kim, and Emily Lovell researched, briefed and argued complex cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit under the supervision of Kathryn Davis, Kathryn Eidmann and Michael Seplow. Chazz Estelle and Lauren Peterkin will also argue before the court at a later date under the supervision of Peter Afrasiabi.

Q&A with Connor Jordan, UC Irvine School of Law Graduate Tax Program Class of 2022
Connor graduated from UCI Law’s Graduate Tax Program in May 2022. Since then, he clerked for Judge Maurice B. Foley at the U.S. Tax Court before transitioning to private practice at Jones Day in Dallas, Texas. Connor works with the Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation group and focuses on solving the tax issues related to private equity transactions. Connor grew up in California, Arizona and Illinois. In his spare time, he adds to his Lego collection and watches all the entire Bravo TV catalog with his fiancée, Kat.

Q: How did UCI Law prepare you for your legal practice?
UCI Law provided three foundational pillars I rely on in my legal practice. First, it provided me with core substantive knowledge of tax law, allowing me to be conversant and functional in the area. Second, it provided me with practical skills courses that allowed me to apply doctrinal principles to real-life examples such that my transition into legal practice was smooth and efficient. Finally, my time at UCI Law provided me with a post-grad support system that has provided continual resources to grow and develop my career and network.
What do you like best about your work?
The breadth of issues faced is intriguing and goes beyond the scope of what is taught in law school. I enjoy breaking down complex concepts (at least complex to me) and then applying them to concrete deliverables — producing a finished work product is much more enjoyable than finishing a law school exam.
Q: What was the best part about being a student at UCI Law?
The people — students, professors and staff! I had a great cohort of LL.M. (and J.D. students who crossed over) who were engaging and fun to be around. I also miss the policy classes, as not much time in my position lends itself to being involved in the policy side. Finally, I miss the best part of Orange County… the weather!
How do you stay involved with the UCI Law community?
Despite being based in Dallas, Texas, I try to keep in touch with the program coordinators and get involved remotely when possible. I also try to sit on and attend relevant panels hosted by UCI Law relating to young practitioners. I am always happy to speak to applicants, current students, and alums when the opportunity presents itself — so please reach out!
