WHAT'S HAPPENING AT UCFS-CALC
Food Pantry Serves
Over 880 Individuals Last Week!
| |
With the dedicated time and energy contributed by our volunteers, and the generous support from The Hesano Family as CALC Feeds Members, we were able to distribute nearly 20,000 pounds of food to 307 families in need last Friday.
This translates to over 880 individuals receiving food items that supplement 30% of their monthly food budget. The impact created by our CALC Feeds Members is meaningful and immediate. We are immensely thankful for the ongoing support that enables us to make such a significant difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Celebrating Memorial Day
in Project Achievement
| |
Last Tuesday, our Project Achievement students learned about why we celebrate Memorial Day in honor of those who served our country.
Students also learned how to make popsicles and had the chance to enjoy them as a yummy treat! Thank you to our very own Executive Board Member, Vanessa Denha-Garmo, for sponsoring last week's Project Achievement! If you’d like to sponsor a week of Project Achievement or youth sports, become a CALC Kids Member today.

Last Tuesday, during our Cooking with CALC session, our clients were excited to make Dolma with a healthy spin. Dolma is a delicacy of the Middle East traditionally made with rice, grape leaves, meat, and a variety of seasonings. Instead of using rice for the recipe, our clients substituted it for quinoa, which they enjoyed!
During the session, our Nutrition Educator encouraged our clients to incorporate more whole grains into their diets to increase their fiber intake and to promote healthy digestive tracts. To learn more about the importance of a balanced diet, please visit MyPlate.gov.

Sustainable Steps Program
UCFS-CALC provides career sampling and exploration opportunities through our Sustainable Steps Program (SSP) which allows our clients to get hands-on experience in a variety of fields to make informed decisions on the career that would be the best fit for them prior to investing time, money, and energy into pursuing a specific field.
Last month, we partnered with Douglas J Aveda Institute in Downtown Royal Oak so our clients could experience firsthand what American cosmetology school is like. Ten of our clients shadowed experienced professionals for the day which exposed them to potential avenues they could take if they decided to pursue a career in cosmetology.
Through SSP, UCFS-CALC helps alleviate barriers to achieving adequate employment such as childcare, auto repairs, basic needs assistance, housing stability assistance, and supports clients pursuing licenses and certifications and ultimately puts them on their path to achieving self-sufficiency.
