WHAT'S HAPPENING AT UCFS-CALC

Creating Salt Paintings

in Project Achievement

Last Tuesday in Project Achievement, our students unleashed their creativity and had the opportunity to craft raised salt paintings! To accomplish the paintings, students used glue, salt, and paint to create their unique masterpieces. This STEAM Project helped the children develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination in a creative way!

A special thank you to Kelly Tomina for sponsoring this week of Project Achievement! If you’d like to sponsor a week of Project Achievement or Project Play On!, become a CALC Kids Member today!

Digital Literacy and

Cultural Orientation Workshop

As a part of our Sustainable Steps Program (SSP), we hosted a Digital Literacy and Cultural Orientation Workshop for twelve clients last week.

With many of our SSP clients being seniors, we found it useful to teach basics like how to set up and use their emails, how to navigate the internet, and how to online shop safely. Clients also learned how to correctly use Google Maps whether they are walking, driving, or using public transportation.

Our Sustainable Steps Program equips our clients with resources to help them integrate and find comfort as they settle into their new community. We are proud to be a part of their journey to achieve self-sufficiency!

30 Mothers Receive CPR Certification

We would like to congratulate thirty mothers in our Maternal Health Education Program (MHEP) for getting CPR Certified last Tuesday!

This year, we revamped MHEP based on the feedback we received from former program participants and new and hopeful mothers. Clients requested Lamaze classes, more nutrition education, and sleep training, as well as CPR classes.

This hands-on training taught them CPR, the Heimlich Maneuver, and basic first aid for children of all ages and adults. With their new certification under their belts, the moms in MHEP are better equipped and more confident in their ability to keep their children safe in the event of an emergency.

MHEP is made possible with grant funding from the Southeast Michigan Perinatal Quality Improvement Coalition (SEMPQIC), Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, United Way for Southeast Michigan, and Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan.

Immigrant Heritage Month

June is Immigrant Heritage Month in Michigan! We are celebrating the refugee community all month long by uplifting their voices and sharing their stories of courage and resilience. The challenges they face are immense and often unimaginable, and we are so grateful to be a small part of their journey as they work to rebuild their lives.

In 2023, Michigan welcomed 3,096 refugees. Each of these 3,096 people and all who came before them have names, stories, hopes, and dreams just like Sara.

Click Here to Watch Sara's Testimony

Sara, along with her family, fled Iraq due to terrorists who were threatening and persecuting Christians. Off camera, Sara mentioned that some days they would wake up to human remains on their front porch as a warning to them, causing them to flee their homeland.

Leaving behind everyone and everything they've ever known, Sara and her family started new lives in the States. With the help of UCFS, they joined the workforce, learned a new language, and are doing their best to get on their feet.
