Walter P. Lomax, Jr., MD began his medical career as a solo practitioner in the same South Philadelphia neighborhood where he lived as a child. He practiced at that same site for 32 consecutive years.  During this time his practice grew from a private single physician office to a multi-site group practice consisting of over 20 physicians.  Thus was born Lomax Medical Associates, a medical group designed to provide quality care in traditionally underserved communities.

In 1982 Dr. Lomax established Lomax Health System, Inc.(LMS), a management company concentrating exclusively on health care.  In1984 LMS won a medical services contract to recruit physicians and physical assistants to supplement the City of Philadelphia staff in the prison system.  In 1990 Correctional Healthcare Solutions, Inc. (CHS) was incorporated to specialize in the management and delivery of health services to correctional institutions.  CHS emerged as a major  participant in this industry, offering quality care and managing costs.  When the company was sold in 2000, CHS was providing health care in 60 correctional facilities in 16 states.

In 1989, LHS joined forces with a Virginia firm to form Healthcare Management Alternative, Inc. (HMA).  HMA successfully won a PA Department of welfare contract to  provide health care to Medicaid recipients in South and West Philadelphia.  After winning the contract Dr. Lomax retired as a practicing physician.  After expanding in Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey the company was sold in 2002 to United Health Group Company.  Today, Lomax Companies, manages a global portfolio of private equity investments with particular emphasis on venture capital and real estate.

In 2003, consistent with the philanthropic sprit of Dr. Lomax and his wife Beverly Dr. Lomax formed the Lomax Family Foundation.  The mission of LFF is to provide funding for eligible non-profit organizations and programs that promote art, health, education and culture in the African American community.  Also in 2003 Dr. Lomax and his wife Beverly purchased 900AM-WURD to ensure that Philadelphia would remain a powerful voice in the living history of conscious Black radio. UAC has co-anchored and produced a weekly talk show Financial Voices at WRUD radio.  Today his daughter Sara Lomax Reese serves as president and CEO.

Dr. Lomax is a graduate of LaSalle University and Hahnemann Medical College.  He was awarded an honorary doctor of science from Lincoln University and Neumann University.  He served on numerous board including LaSalle University and Universal Companies and received many honors.

However, with all of his professional and business success, he said in 2011 it was his family that brought him the most joy. Walter and Beverly were married for over 50 years and are blessed with six children many who work in the Lomax Companies.
