Multidisciplinary Team Secures $3 Million Grant to Advance RNA-Based Treatments for Rare Cystic Fibrosis Mutations

A multidisciplinary team of center members has secured a $3 million grant from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Under the leadership of RNA Therapeutics Director Michelle Hastings, Ph.D., and colleagues Rachel Niederer, Ph.D., and Alexandra Piotrowski-Daspit, Ph.D., the funding will further research into novel RNA-based treatments for rare cystic fibrosis mutations that currently have no targeted therapies. Each member will oversee a different link in the bench-to-bedside chain.

Read this informative article by Paul Avedisian and Michele Santillan to learn more about how this dynamic team of researchers is leveraging their strengths and collective wealth of knowledge on the CTFR gene to revolutionize treatment options for those suffering from rare and often untreatable forms of cystic fibrosis.

RNA Featured Researcher

Solving science's greatest mysteries:

Mason Myers from Scooby-Doo to CRISPR superhero

In this issue, we’re reintroducing the popular “RNA Featured Researcher” section of the website, to provide a snapshot of the people that make up the diverse, wide-ranging RNA research community at the U-M. Each installment showcases a faculty or student member, who is asked questions about their background, areas of research, recent accomplishments, and hopes for the future — with a few off-the-cuff tidbits thrown into the mix. We hope you enjoy the return of this column, and let us know what you think!

Mapping the way to personalized kidney treatments: NEPTUNE's innovative approach

Dr. Matthias Kretzler's research with the Nephrotic Syndrome Study Network is changing the landscape of kidney disease treatment by correlating detailed molecular data with patient clinical trials through the NEPTUNE Match program. His pioneering findings, detailed in Kidney International, have led to a molecular-based classification of nephrotic syndrome, earning recognition from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS). Such advancements support the growth of RNA therapies and tailor-made care in kidney disease management.

Learn more about personalized medicine's importance in treating kidney disease and Dr. Kretzler's lab's discovery of distinct molecular subgroups of kidney disease, by reading this set of Health Lab articles by Miranda Trotman and Tessa Roy.

Learn all about Dr. Ljungman's KLIPP technique for CRISPR-Cas 9 systems

Enjoy this video which details KLIPP, a "split enzyme" system pioneered by Center for RNA Biomedicine co-director, Mats Ljungman, Ph.D., whose lab has done dynamic work putting together a strong proof of concept for this promising RNA-based therapy.
