From fragmented to focused: Pancreas research gets a unified boost

Advancements in pancreas research, driven by sophisticated imaging and sequencing techniques, are generating a wealth of data. Yet, this data is fragmented and inconsistently processed, posing challenges for non-experts in computational biology.

To tackle this, a team of researchers from across the country—including Stephen Parker, Ph.D., and Jie Liu, Ph.D.,—is launching the Pancreas KnowledgeBase (PanKbase) program. With a $12.5 million NIH grant, PanKbase aims utilize FAIR Principles of Data to compile diverse datasets into a unified resource focused on the human pancreas.

This consolidation is expected to spur collaboration and innovation in pancreas-related research.

Charting genetic terrain: Ovarian mapping study opens doors to extended fertility and hormonal balance

Jun Li, Ph.D., and Sue Hammoud, Ph.D., are part of a team of researchers at the University of Michigan who—as part of the Human Cell Atlas project—mapped out the genetic processes of the human ovary, focusing particularly on hormone-producing ovarian follicles and the oocytes they contain.

These mappings and explorations, published in Science Advances, have provided deeper insights into follicle functionality and its decline with aging and fertility-related diseases. The team aims to leverage this understanding to develop engineered ovarian tissue, potentially extending fertility windows and supporting hormone production for menstrual cycle regulation, as well as promoting the health of organs like the heart, breasts, and bones.
