Message from the Chair - Tessique Houston
|
Hello Area 12!
Ah! The end of the year! Well, not the calendar year, but the end of most handbell groups' seasons. I am busy preparing for final concerts and the last service of the season. Lots to do and very little time left! I'm
sure you all feel the same way.
National Seminar is in Grand Rapids, Michigan,
July 17-21 (see Our National Organization sidebar). There are going to be some great concerts and some awesome learning going on! I hope you will go!
Remember - Area 12 offers the Patty Marquart scholarship to help
directors
who are attending National Seminar for the first ti
me. The deadline is May 31, so you have plenty of time to get an application in. See the
Scholarship Page
on our website for complete information.
Until next time,
Tessique Houston

Tip of the Month
Where's the melody?
Directors, have you harped on not hearing the melody? Ringers, have you thought "how would I know what the melody is?" Here are two hints!
Directors, make sure you know exactly where the melody notes lie, checking one, two, or even three octaves lower than the top note. Then ask your choir to ring ONLY the melody. You'll be in for a surprise! We cannot sing more than one note at a time, we can't sing in harmony with ourselves. A melody is a single note at a time ~ but you'll most likely hear lots of other notes being rung at the same time. Most ringers don't know how to separate the melody from everything else! Keep asking them to ring just those melody notes, giving them hints, as a good object lesson for them. It also helps for ringers to write in the words, if there are any, in their scores.
Ringers ~ find the melody wherever it appears, and highlight those notes. When your note is highlighted, ring it out with full arm motion - damp in mid-air with your fingers if you like. That's faster and more graceful than rushing the bell back to shoulder damp. If the note is not highlighted, ring it closer to your body, and a bit softer than the melody. It gets tricky when the same bell rings both melody and harmony with no break between - but even then that bell should ring each note differently.

Hi, Southern Nevada!
I hope everyone is enjoying the Easter season and there's lots of ringing going on! As you're preparing for spring concerts, remember to make the most of Handbell Musicians of America and submit your concerts to be posted on the Area 12 calendar
. It's really easy with the online form. Also, make sure to take advantage of social media options. On Facebook, there're several groups where you can advertise yourself: Southern Nevada Handbells, Handbell-L, Handbell People, and Team Handbell (they limit personal promotions to Mondays only). So, check out these sites and others for putting your own info out there as well as seeing what else is going on in the area.

The Bay Area put on another successful Spring Ring with Ellie Hodder at the
helm. Attendees enjoyed a lunchtime performance and
six-in-hand class
by Mary Liao.
We also experimented with a reading session for
ensembles in addition
to the more traditional full choir session since many of us helm smaller groups these days.
The final concert included massed ringing, solo performances, a world premiere, a brass ensemble, bell trees, and the always exciting Intense Ring selections. Thank you to everyone who attended, either behind the tables or in the audience. We enjoyed having you!
