Message from the Chair - Tessique Houston
|
Hello Area 12!
I hope that you are all looking forward to the season to come. I know you all have been working to make it all successful.
I am really looking forward to all the wonderful music we will be creating and listening to. "Music," to quote Albus Dumbledore, "A magic beyond all we do here!" Isn't that the truth! Music takes us to such great places - riding over snow covered hills in a sleigh; looking at the stars with the shepherds; spinning a dreidel; toasting to a new year!
Happy Ringing as we move toward the end of 2017!
Until next time,

Greetings, SoCal-ers!
Area 12's Education Director, KatRyn Howell, and I had a wonderful time in Germany last month conducting the 2017 German National Festival in Karlsruhe.
Over 60 handbell musicians from all over Germany came to learn in classes and divisional and massed ringing which culminated in a very well-received public concert.
I wrote last month's article while I was on the plane to Germany and said I loved teaching all over the world because I always learn something. I promised to share with you what I learned this year, so here it is: I learned that you can use CDs as separators on bell trees!
If it's an issue for you to buy the plastic rings, the metal clips, or the acrylic blocks to keep your bell tree bells separated, or if you just want to "upcycle" something to keep it out of the waste stream, consider using some of those unused CDs that most of us seem to have lying about the place.
In other news, I have the repertoire list for the 2018 SoCal Spring Ring on May 19! I'm very excited our clinician KatRyn Howell will feature music from Area 12 composers! These titles may be purchased from any handbell retailer, with the exception of the processional, Torch Dance.
*)
Chester Skies, by Stan DeWitt. Level 3. Genesis Press GP3002. 5 octaves handbells.
*)
Felicidades!, by F. Thomas Simpson. Level 3. Harold Flammer HP5397. 3-5 octaves handbells.
*)
Moonlight Serenade, by Glen Miller, arr by Paul Allen. Level 4. From the Top Publishing #20294. 5-7 oct handbells and 5 oct handchimes, with optional flute.
Registration forms and more information about the event are now available on the
SoCal Page at the
Area 12 website so please head on over there, download the forms, and get them back to me soon to secure your place at the festival!
As a reminder, please submit your upcoming holiday events on our website using our
easy form. I'm starting to see events from other regions of Area 12, so I'm hoping SoCal will represent this season! :-)
All my best,

Hi, Bay Area! (or should I say, "Boo Areaaagh!")
As we head into the holidays, we often turn our thoughts to how we can give back to the community. Many of us donate food and other products to those in need. It feels especially poignant this year as many of our friends and families are affected by the recent wildfires. We also look for ways to give musical gifts to our communities. I have rung at Christmas tree lightings, senior homes, and also at a local mental health facility.
Looking ahead to spring (you can never think too far out...), the Bay Area Spring Ring and Intense Ring repertoire lists are up on the
www.handbellventures.org site. Get ready for a lively event with Ellie Hodder!

Hello Northern California,
The Redding Handbell Festival took place October 14 with 70 participants from bell choirs and
individuals from Sacramento, Redding, Montague, Lake Almanor, Orland, and Reno who came together
to learn in classes, take
part in massed ringing, and
enjoy fellowship with o
ther ringers. A huge thank you
to Barb Walsh who filled in as the massed director for Mary Balkow who was unable to come at the last
minute. 100 people enjoyed the finale concert!
Please remember to send me your bell ensemble's information about upcoming concerts, workshops,
or festivals so I can post the information to our calendar.
I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.

It's FALL - but it sure doesn't feel like it! I am so ready for those crisp, colorful fall days. I hope you are enjoying the beginning of your ringing year, with bells freshened up, polished, and rarin' to ring.
What's going on in CenCal???
Surely you have events and concerts coming up. Please share your information with me so I can pass it on.
If anyone has a hankerin' to drive down to Santa Clarita, I'll be conducting (and ringing in) our annual Bellfest at The Master's University ~ and we still have room for either full choirs or orphan ringers. Date:
November 4, 2 PM
, with a concert at
4 PM.
Please contact me ASAP if you want to attend...even at the last minute.
I'm compiling a list of folks who want to either sell or buy used handbells and handchimes. If anyone is interested, please let me know and I'll put you on the list. I have G4-F#5 Schulmerich bells for sale on that list, and a request to buy the 5th octaves of Schulmerich bells. That's it so far.
Please tell me what your handbells are up to this fall!
Happy Ringing!

Howdy!
I had the honor of conducting two Area 12 events in October, one in Honolulu and one in Redding. I find it very exciting and rewarding to share love of music and especially handbells with both new and old friends. I often get philosophical preparing for these events; like, why does being part of a handbell ensemble feel different from being a part of an orchestra or a band or a choir? A couple of nights ago, I read an online article written by Cynthia Bourgeault, and even though her subject was something completely different, many of her words made me think about why a handbell ensemble is special. "..intentional sense of mutual interdependence," "...belonging to a greater relational field," "...a whole greater than the sum of its parts. In this greater whole both unity and differentiation are preserved."
Wow and amen!
