Happy New Year Area 12!
I hope you are all finding time to rest and recharge after the December holiday season. And then...what are your plans for the coming Spring? Maybe put a little elbow grease into polishing up the bells after all the use they got in the Fall? Finalize plans for attending a Spring Ring or other workshop? Get the music tuned up and ready for a Spring Concert? Those all sound like wonderful plans!
As we gear up for another Spring Season, I wish you all success in those endeavors, and any others you have set your sights on.
Happy ringing in 2018!

I hope everyone had a great time ringing through the holiday season!
Perhaps you're not quite ready to see the holidays end. Check out the Las Vegas 12th Night Handbell Festival with guest clinician, Christine Anderson, on January 12 &13 at the Boulder City Recreation Center (900 Arizona St, Boulder City). A store with all sorts of handbell goodies from Jeffers Handbell Supply will be there. A closing concert will be at 4:30 on Saturday, January 13. If you can't ring at the festival, come enjoy one last holiday concert to close out the season!
It's not too late! Join us!

Happy New Year!
This is the time of year when we often set New Year's Resolutions to better ourselves for the year ahead. Some of us are more skilled at sticking to them than others. Some of us try to lose weight or exercise more, but what about trying something new? Have you considered learning to dance or taking a glass-blowing workshop? What about improving your ringing or directing skills? There are plenty of events going on in the coming year for you to attend!
There is, of course, the Bay Area Spring Ring, whose registration will open in mid-January, but you can also contact local handbell experts for customized workshops! Or you could look to a grander scale and attend a regional, national, or even International event. Wouldn't you like to spend a week in Australia this summer experiencing internationally renowned handbell ensembles? I attended the IHS in Vancouver two years ago and it was unlike anything I've ever experienced.
As for me, next on my to-do list after finishing this article is to get to work on my thesis to complete a Master's Degree in Music Education. I'm creating a handbell curriculum and writing about the process. I'm sure you'll hear more about it when I'm done!

When you receive this newsletter, I assume most of your holiday handbell concerts/preparations will be over. I hope they went well. Here in Pasadena, we have one more celebration each year after Christmas, on the 1st of January. The streets are packed with over 3/4 of a million people as we celebrate the new year with the Rose Parade. In the not to distant past, handbells used to play a part in the parade having marched - while ringing handbells - the 5 miles on at least 3 occasions! I hope you will be doing some spring
ringing in the not too distant future. And speaking of spring ringing, please plan on joining us in Pasadena on April 7th for our LA Metro Spring Ring, with our special guest conductor, Kathy Ebling-Shaw!
Registration forms are now up on our
website.

Happy New Year, SoCal!
I hope you've had a wonderful holiday handbell season! My own church bell choir played for Christmas Eve and did quite well -- they have come so far this year and I am so very proud of them. We're taking a week off then preparing for the rest of the program year starting next week.
Are you ready for your post-holiday program re-start? Are you planning a Spring concert? Be sure to either submit your concert info via the form on the
Area 12 website or
email me the info and I'll submit the info for you.
Are you planning to attend the So Cal Spring Ring in May? If you are, please get your registrations in quickly to reserve a great spot on the ringing floor! Do you have questions about the event?
Email me and I'll do my best to answer them!

Hello Northern California,
As we begin a new year I would like to take this opportunity to give a HUGE thank you to all directors
and ringers for your time and talents and energy and most of all your willingness to share the art of
handbell ringing throughout and near your communities. The people who hear us ring are always so
appreciative of our performances whether it is a small group at the Salvation Army corner or an entire bell
choir performing a concert or offering special music at our churches or retirement homes.
THANK YOU many times over.
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018

Howdy!
Even though we handbell musicians get tired of informing people that we DO play handbells year 'round, we have to take advantage of the fact that people think about handbells at Christmas. One of the local high school choir teachers asked me to come in and teach her Advanced Placement Music Theory class how to play handchimes this December. Of course I obliged her and used the chimes to reinforce all those theory concepts she'd been teaching her students. We had a grand time and I hope to be back sometime in the Spring to play pieces that are NOT Christmas tunes!

Greetings, Central California!
I hope y'all have happy memories of the Christmas ringing season and are taking a break before things get busy again!
It's not too soon to look ahead to spring ring opportunities. Trinity Ringers in San Luis Obispo would like to organize a spring ring, but because their pews are bolted to the floor, they can't be moved for a group of handbell ringers. Is there anyone in CenCal who can provide a venue if Trinity Ringers do all the organizing? Dates: any time between late April through early June. Please contact Debra Wacker at
805-546-1099
or
wackertwin@aol.com for more details.
