Welcome Back

We're excited to present our third issue of "Turtle Talk," a monthly e-blast with the latest updates and news-you-can-use about the South Bay Local Travel Network (LTN), produced by the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG).

A little reminder: the LTN is a proposed 243-mile network of existing, low-speed routes designed to accommodate travel via small, low-speed vehicles (aka street-worthy golf carts, e-bikes, pedal bikes, e-scooters, etc.).

Slow-Speed Superstar

El Segundo resident Shauna Skarin and her family are big fans of their neighborhood electric vehicle (NEV). The Skarins drive their vehicle everywhere: school, extracurricular activities, restaurants, the beach, you name it.

Shauna Skarin says the lack of doors and windows makes for easy pick up and drop off, and it saves money on gas mileage. Equipped with a lithium ion battery, the vehicle works well for El Segundo's small and hilly community.

Skarin says that the LTN Pilot is "fabulous and fun," as her family conveniently resides on an LTN street. She would like to thank the City of El Segundo and especially Mayor and former SBCCOG Chair Drew Boyles for spearheading this project.

Mode of the Month

Mode of the Month highlights low-speed modes that are frequently seen on the road today.

E-scooters are propelled by an electric motor (usually with human assist) and come in both standing and seated forms. They are a popular mode for getting to and from public transportation stops.

Tips From the Turtle: Road Visibility

🛴 Prop your e-scooter upright when not in use, away from pedestrians and traffic to prevent tripping hazards. Nobody likes a scooter to the ankle!

Rolling into the Future

Meet Arma

The world’s smallest e-scooter may be coming to market later this year. Shimizu’s Arma scooter folds up into the size of a laptop, redefining mobility for commuters.

The scooter weighs approximately 10 pounds, but can carry 220 pounds, has a 7-mile range, and charges in two hours.

New micromobility innovations and technologies are constantly emerging from around the world. We want to showcase some of these exciting vehicle inventions in the industry. Perhaps you’ll spot one of these devices cruising around the South Bay in the near future.

Have you tried the El Segundo LTN?

We would like to learn your thoughts on the Local Travel Network pilot, especially if you live or work in El Segundo. Taking our survey will help us make adjustments to future routes and signage as we further develop the network and expand to other South Bay cities.

What Do You Think?

What factors would encourage you to use an LTN in your city? (can select multiple)
Connectivity to neighboring cities
Access to destinations in my own city
Discounts, tax credits or rebates to purchase a low-speed vehicle
Opportunities to test ride/drive a vehicle
More road safety features (protected lanes, speed bumps, etc)
