Old City Fest is a celebration of art and design, fashion and food, creativity and culture on the streets of America's most historic square mile- Old City, Philadelphia. This event highlights the region's premier art and design district, showcasing local designers, creative firms, restaurants, retailers, galleries, theater, culture, history and architecture. The Design Showcase, opening during Old City Fest is located in the Gerry Lenfest Gallery at The Center for Art in Wood.
The week long showcase, open daily from 10 to 5 in the Center's Gerry Lenfest Gallery, will feature actual room settings created by Marguerite Rodgers Interior Design using an eclectic array of furnishings, objects and art exclusively from Old City shops and galleries. In addition to the normal operating hours at the Center, the showcase will be open during Old City Fest on Sunday, October 11 from 12 to 6pm and during the
DesignPhiladelphia Closing Event on Friday, October 16.
Exhibiting American Craft Council (ACC) Fellow Awardees:
Sharon Church, jeweler;
David Ellsworth, wood turner;
Michael Hurwitz, furniture maker;
Bruce Metcalf, jeweler; and the late
George Nakashima, furniture maker. Each of the artists work in wood and have distinctive careers that span 25 years or more. The Philadelphia region is widely recognized for its rich history within the field of craft, now reflected in the number of local artists who have been elected to the ACC College of Fellows.
Art in Wood: Philadelphia's ACC Fellows opens on October 30 and features five of America's most prominent artists and Fellows of the American Craft Council (ACC) who are highlighted in our Gerry Lenfest Gallery. In addition to seeing the earliest preview of the exhibition,
this event will give attendees the opportunity to the Fellows and hear them speak about their exhibited work.
Keynote address by Perry Price, American Craft Council (ACC) Director of Education.
Moderators Bruce Metcalf and Judith Schaechter will present a panel discussion consisting of teachers and their choice of an artist they once taught or mentored. Topics will include the transitions between generations of makers, transactions between deep knowledge and learning, and speculation about the future of craft.

On Saturday, November 14th, craft steps out of the studio and into the heart of Philadelphia with CraftNOWCreate, a hands-on exploration of craft at the Kimmel Center. All activities are free and family-friendly. Demonstrations by the Center are programmed by Suzanne Kahn and include a wooden whistle workshop by Beth Ireland and Suzanne, wood turning on the lathe by Derek Weidman.

Ray Leier, one of the most influential names in woodturning, passed away in early September. In 1973, Ray along with the late Jan Peters, opened del Mano Gallery in Los Angeles, California bringing wood art to the fore front of the craft movement. They are credited with having a large hand in the development of woodturning and wood art into a fine art, as well as supporting and facilitating the prominence of today's many well-known artists. Together, Jan and Ray, published numerous books on the topic and brought the world of Woodturning to SOFA, a fine arts and sculpture convention held yearly in Chicago.
Gorst DuPlessis
The passing of Gorst DuPlessis ends an era of good work and great times. When Gorst burst onto the scene in the 1990's, he brought stories and personality and an enthusiasm for ornamental turning that was larger than life. It's a shame that he is gone, but it's the full blown doctor that I'll always remember.

Meet the Fellows

As The Center for Art in Wood approaches its 30th anniversary in 2016 we present a major exhibition in the Gerry Lenfest Gallery of the Philadelphia American Craft Council (ACC) Fellows who work in wood and wood in combination with other materials. The Fellows include furniture makers Michael Hurwitz and the late George Nakashima, wood turner David Ellsworth, and jewelers Sharon Church and Bruce Metcalf.
Paul J. Smith PORTRAITS: A Photographic Journal of Wood Artists Concurrent with Art in Wood the Center will display a selection of portrait photographs of studio craft artists and designers working in wood by Paul J. Smith, Director Emeritus of the Museum of Arts and Design. An ACC Honorary Fellow, Smith was awarded the ACC's 2009 Aileen Osborn Webb Award for Philanthropy in recognition of his contributions to the craft field.
