The Loisaida Inc. Center’s Summer Youth Employment Program, which launched in July, is wrapping up as the summer comes to a close. You are invited to join us virtually this afternoon at 2:30pm for a look at what some of the participants of the Ecolibrium program have been working on for the past six weeks!
Additionally, we have some exciting things happening this fall! In September we are once again giving away FREE backpacks and school supplies to local students, in partnership with Trinity Church Wall Street - the registration form is now live. Our fan-favorite Puerto Rican cooking class series, La Cocina de Loisaida, is returning in September with 12 more sessions - buy your tickets early, they're known to sell out! Our youth media production program M.U.J.E.R. (Media Used for Equity, Justice & Respect) is relaunching in October and applications are now open.

ECOLIBRIUM Summer Showcase

The Loisaida Inc. Center kicked off our Summer Internship Program in July, welcoming 10 full-time interns via the Ladders for Leaders program by the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development’s (DYCD) Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).
It was a multi-institution collaboration welcoming students from the Cooper Union School of Engineering, St. Johns University, Scholars Academy High School, and LaGuardia High School.
Please join us virtually for the final presentations by the team dedicated to our environmental justice initiative titled ECOLIBRIUM, where they were broken up into groups depending on their areas of interest and research projects. The teams include:

IoT/Tech Team: Working on creating environmental sensors that will measure indoor and outdoor air quality;

Media Team: Tasked with documenting the progress and producing short video clips and social media posts;

Environment & Data Team: Working on an emissions inventory, incorporating existing public data and past work of previous teams, while engaging in guided self-learning to improve coding skills and data visualizations.
We are proud of these young creators, makers and designers who are leading us to a brighter, greener and more equitable future!

Sín Walkman's first LP, "Héroes del Estéreo" is the sound of Bronx beaches, Santurce heartaches and Brooklyn beats. Folks songs to tap away your blues and Caribbean rhythms to heal your spirit. It's a diasporic journey from Puerto Rico to Crown Heights, to Harlem and beyond. It's acoustic jayeo.

Cultured Coffee is a multidisciplinary art showcase during the months of May-August. This is a recurring event during the months of May - September taking place on the last Friday of every month, now at the Loisaida Inc. Center (710 E 9th Street, New York, NY 10009). Their fourth date is August 25th from 5:00-9:30pm.
Cultured Coffee is curated by House of Khaos X Disrupt Media, two NYC based creative platforms that highlight stories and voices of people of color. These showcases will highlight artistry of all kinds - dance, spoken word, music, film/media, and visual art. The intention behind this community space is to encourage creativity and cultivate the kind of connection that inspires us all to keep growing in our work. Loisaida Inc. & Trinity Church Backpack Giveaway

Loisaida Inc. and Trinity Church Wall Street have partnered for a Back to School event for the new semester. From September 6th – September 8th, we will be giving out a limited amount of backpacks filled with school supplies to students in our community who are in need.
The student (grades K-8) must be attending a District 1 public school in the Lower East Side. Students must be present at pick-up. One backpack per student while supplies last.
Please fill out this form (linked below) for your student(s) who need school supplies. We'll make sure to contact you with more details. You can also fill out the form for another family/student that may not have access to this form.

La Cocina de Loisaida: Season 3
September – December 2023

La Cocina de Loisaida is a monthly in-person cooking class series presented by Loisaida Inc. and Essex Market, where longtime Lower East Sider and home chef Maria Bido shares authentic Puerto Rican recipes and cooking techniques.
Each month we’ll explore a new batch of family favorites based on Puerto Rican flavors and using ingredients from Essex Market.
In this new season, learn to create the Puerto Rican National Dish (Arroz con Gandules), Arroz con Pollo, Pasteles, Coquito, and several other dishes that are a phenomenal combination of traditional Caribbean Flavors!
Each class will be approximately 1.5-2 hours long and include time to savor the dishes you prepare together as a group. La Cocina de Loisaida takes place in the Essex Kitchen – Essex Market's demonstration and teaching kitchen on the market's mezzanine level.
This series is presented in partnership with The Loisaida Center with the collective mission to preserve and pass down culinary heritage from the Lower East Side community. We invite all ages and abilities to join us for these unique, fun, celebratory cooking classes at Essex Market.

La Cocina de Loisaida es una serie mensual de clases de cocina en persona presentada por Loisaida Inc. y Essex Market, donde Maria Bido, chef casera y veterana del Lower East Site, comparte auténticas recetas y técnicas de cocina puertorriqueñas.
Cada mes exploraremos un nuevo lote de favoritos de la familia, todos basados en sabores puertorriqueños y utilizando ingredientes de Essex Market.
¡En esta nueva temporada, aprende a crear el Plato Nacional Puertorriqueño (Arroz con Gandules), Arroz con Pollo, Pasteles, Coquito y muchos otros platos que son una combinación fenomenal de los sabores caribeños tradicionales!

M.U.J.E.R. Pivot Application Now Open!
October – November 2023

Media Used for Justice Equity and Respect (M.U.J.E.R.) is a program that brings a unique opportunity for youth ages 18+ to young adults of up to 35 to lead an independent media production project to share a personal story, learn to develop strategic messaging, work on script writing, editing and more.
If you're a person of color, an ally of women, non-gender specific LGTBQ+A, emergent or pre-emergent creator, artist, media enthusiast, maker/inventor, entrepreneur, and creative, then you are all encouraged to apply.
Selected participants also receive a modest stipend for their commitment, consistent attendance, and participation throughout the program. Participants are chosen through an application process, applications are reviewed by a committee of fellow artists, professionals, educators, counselors, and community leaders.

Media Used for Justice Equity and Respect (M.U.J.E.R.) es un programa que brinda una oportunidad única para jóvenes mayores de 18 años y adultos jóvenes de hasta 35 años para liderar un proyecto de producción de medios independiente para compartir una historia personal, aprender a desarrollar mensajes estratégicos, trabajar en la redacción de guiones, editar y más.
Si eres una persona de color, una aliada de las mujeres, LGTBQ+A no específica de género, creadora emergente, artista, entusiasta de los medios, creadora/inventora, emprendedora y creativa, entonces te animamos a postularte.
Los participantes seleccionados también reciben un estipendio modesto por su compromiso, asistencia constante y participación durante todo el programa. Los participantes se eligen a través de un proceso de solicitud, las solicitudes son revisadas por un comité de compañeros artistas, profesionales, educadores, consejeros y líderes comunitarios.

LMCC 2024 Manhattan Arts Grants Now Open!

Calling all Manhattan artists and arts organizations! Applications for LMCC’s 2024 Manhattan Arts Grants are now open!
LMCC awards grants each year to Manhattan-based artists, collectives, and organizations engaging Manhattan communities through a wide range of artistic programming and events.
2024 Guidelines and Applications for Creative Engagement, Creative Learning, and UMEZ Arts Engagement are now live! The application deadline for all three programs is September 12, 2023, 5PM for projects taking place in 2024.
Meet program staff, get an overview of program requirements, and learn how to build a strong application by attending an interactive information session webinar. Attendance is required for first-time applicants to LMCC’s Manhattan Arts Grants. Returning applicants must attend a live session or watch a recorded session.
