THIS MONTH--Turn Your Radio On for LIVE MUSIC, Join KVMR's Homegrown Storytellers, Win an E-Bike, Women Making Music Series is BACK, Meet The Broadcasters, and Happy Father's Day from KVMR!

Celebrate dads with live bluegrass music at California Bluegrass Association’s 49th Annual Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival, starting today through Sunday, June 16th. Hear select artists perform live from the festival on KVMR beginning today at 10am, and all weekend long. This year the fest includes over 32 acts on 3 stages, Music Camp All Stars, free music workshops, square dances, youth programs, 24/7 jamming, and loads of fun activities for the whole family. Nothing beats being there in person, but if you’re sequestered for one reason or another, treat your ears to fresh bluegrass in your car, workshop, office, or couch. If you make it out to the fest, drop by the KVMR booth and say hello, or we'll see you on the radio!

LISTEN LIVE

Fun fact: Four decades ago, Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival was held in the dusty parking lot of the Nevada County Fairgrounds, because there weren’t enough patrons to afford the grounds... A bluegrass festival with no grass! Eric Rice realized more people would go if only they knew about it, so invented KVMR's live-remote broadcasts about 1985, all for the love of a mandolin. Since then, legions of new fans have discovered an appreciation for traditional bluegrass music and showed up to meet each other and enjoy the fest in person. Eric hosts The County Line Bluegrass Show on KVMR Saturday mornings, 10am to noon. However this Saturday he'll be bringing you live bluegrass music from the festival that started it all. And yep, it's on the grass!

Meet the Broadcasters!

Meet Sabrina Blackburn, host of Beat Bizzare

Sabrina moved to Nevada City about three years ago. She graduated KVMR's training clas in February of this year, and already has a show, Beat Bizarre, alternate Tuesday mornings 5-7am. She says, "I’ve been obsessed with music, art and community radio from a young age. I am an oil painter and also play guitar, drums and sing. I recorded an album and toured Italy for a few months in my early 20s. When I moved to Nevada City I opened an art gallery/performance venue called The Sacred Higher Ground Gallery & Art Collective on Commercial Street, which I’ve since closed to focus on school and painting full time. My father, also an artist, always encouraged me to listen to music from all over the world, to broaden my own art and music. I am so honored to be a part of this incredible station, and to have gotten to know so many through KVMR! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity to share my love of rare, underground artists with you all!"

Beat Bizarre airs live alternate Tuesday mornings 5-7am, or catch it on the archive anytime. Afro beat, world music, psychedelic rock, funk, Latin fusion, soul, hip hop, and things that make you groove from all over the world!

It Was The 90s!

Eric Rice at a Fairgrounds Festival 90s

Is he producing the live remote broadcast for Father's Day Bluegrass in this photo, circa 1992? Maybeeee...

All these years later he's still bringing fresh music to the airwaves and your earholes. See you on the radio, Eric!

Highschool Husky LePew

Huskey sez… “I have been a fan and dedicated listener of Soul/R&B music since the '70s. Over the years I became what I considered a 'connoisseur.' About 2 years ago I discovered jazz singer TY CAUSEY on FB. One song and I loved it! So I researched his library. Within 30 minutes I had added 40 songs to my library!!! WHAT A SINGER!! To my shock and amazement, Ty has been putting out albums since 2005. I'd never heard him before, on radio or word of mouth. So I featured him on the June 6th edition of Sierra Soul Train, and had a live phone interview with him. He doesn't tour, and he doesn't perform outside of his home state of INDIANA. Check it out HERE."

Classics Declassified Hosts a Special Show, With a Special Guest!

Veteran broadcaster Keith Porter and relative newcomer John Watson will be collaborating at the end of June on a special show putting the spotlight on a fascinating new play, having its first-ever reading in Nevada City this July.

The play: “Resistance,” written and directed by Jeffrey Mason, follows the life of a famous German conductor, modeled after musical genius Wilhelm Furtwängler, conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic throughout the Third Reich. During a crucial period of his career, the Conductor navigates the treacherous political waters created when a nefarious Party comes to power.

Sierra Stages presents a premiere staged reading of “Resistance” at the Nevada Theatre on the evening of Wednesday, July 17. John, a longtime community theater actor, portrays the Conductor.

The special edition: “Classics Declassified” co-host Keith has invited John to be his guest on June 30, 6-8 p.m., playing 1940s-50s recordings of classical music conducted by Furtwängler, widely considered to be one of the greatest symphonic conductors of the 20th century. The focus is on music invoked within the “Resistance” script, including the entirety of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Keith has for many years co-hosted both “Classics Declassified” and “The Sages Among Us.” John joined the roster of “South of the Border” co-hosts in early 2022 while appearing in a variety of local theater productions, including “You Can’t Take It with You” for Sierra Stages and “Clue On Stage” for the Lyric Rose Theatre.

Please tune in June 30 for this very special edition of “Classics Declassified,” 6-8pm!

The Kids Are Alright

Community radio is a great place for people of all ages to try on new skills. KVMR partners with local high schools and job placement agencies to give opportunities through internships for young people to do professional work when they're just starting out. We are so grateful for the work they have contributed to KVMR. Many KVMR interns have stuck around, becoming broadcasters and contributors, because they find a community here as well. We are proud of the impact we've had in creating avenues for folks to pursue their dreams wherever it leads them. To every volunteer, intern, broadcaster, donor KVMR has had during the last 46 years—you'll always be part of the KVMR family. Thank you so much!
