Memorial Day! We honor all out fallen service members
Feature Stories
Researchers at Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, led by Benjamin Weinberg, MD, studied the microbiome of people with colorectal cancer and found the makeup of the bacteria, fungi and viruses in a person’s tumor varied significantly depending on whether they were diagnosed with early onset disease (age 45 or younger) or late-onset disease (age 65 or older). These results may help answer the riddle of why more young people are developing colorectal cancer, particularly those who have no known identifiable risk factors for the disease.
Ever since their families grappled with health crises, Ralf Martz Sulague (G’23) and Allison Fitzgerald (M’23, G’23) wanted to pursue careers taking care of patients’ health. But they both knew they wanted to make an impact outside of the doctor’s office and came to Georgetown to expand the reach of their MD degrees. In the years since, Sulague has traveled to Ghana to research financial risk associated with major surgery and Fitzgerald has made important contributions to pancreatic cancer research.
For 19 years, Marc Smith and Georgetown’s Landscape Department have prepared the Hilltop to look its best for commencement. This year, Smith attended the ceremonies for the first time as a parent, watching his daughter, Morgan graduate from the School of Nursing
At commencement, TV journalists, CEOs, professors, nonprofit leaders, alumni and a rear admiral visited Georgetown to share their words of wisdom with the Class of 2023.
