NTC Reading Project: Required Summer Reading for New Students

The Reading Project is a signature, and mandatory, experience for new Tulane students. Incoming students are tasked with reading the book over the summer before they arrive on campus. Students received information about the Reading Project in their June 3 Navigator newsletter. The 2024 Reading Project book selection for the Class of 2028 is Platonic: How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Make—and Keep—Friends by Dr. Marisa G. Franco.

Students will participate in a faculty-led group discussion on Friday, August 16, 2024, during their Hullabaloo Hello (orientation) experience.

This activity serves as students' first intellectual conversation at Tulane. They will then have numerous opportunities to continue their engagement with the book themes through the Kylene and Brad Beers Reading Project Keynote Lecture and various other campus programming. For more information visit https://firstyear.tulane.edu/reading-project.

Airfare and Lodging Discounts for Move-In Travel

Move-In travel information has been mentioned elsewhere, but here are reminders to guide your planning for your journey to New Orleans and Tulane in August:

  • Students should not make travel arrangements without consulting the Move-In date and arrival time slot they received from Housing and Residence Life. (Students can check their Tulane email and/or Housing Portal for this information.)
  • Each Move-In Day includes activities for parents and family members:
  • 1 - 4 p.m. - Family Resource Station - drop-in style campus resource information tables
  • 1 - 4 p.m - Goldman Center for Student Accessibility Student and Family Orientation - drop-in meet and greet with staff, tours of testing facility
  • 5 - 5:45 p.m. - Family Welcome Event - special welcome from university senior leaders (While parents are in this event, students have a separate meeting with their Wave Leaders, trained upper division volunteers.)
  • 6 - 7:30 p.m. -  Center for Intercultural Life hosts a Student & Family Orientation and Dinner centering students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, and their families
  • 7 - 8 p.m. - Drop-In Residence Life programming - casual gathering for students to meet the other students in their own residence hall community
  • When should you leave? Students' mandatory Hullabaloo Hello orientation meetings and activities begin at 10 a.m. the morning after their assigned Move-In day, so parents and other family members should plan to leave before that time. Once that begins students will be busy all the way to their first day of classes on Monday, August 19.
  • If your family wishes to explore New Orleans together on this trip, you should plan to do that before your student's Move-In day.
