Dear Tulane University,
It's finally Move-In time at Tulane! Many first-year students’ families are already in New Orleans or are on the way soon for Move-in on August 11, 12 or 13. I'm sending this newsletter issue so you can find Move-In reference information in one convenient place near the top of your mailbox.
Please make sure your student has caught up on all of their Tulane email. After this point, they won't have you nearby to nudge them in this regard, so it's very important they adopt the habit of checking it every day. The FYE Office emailed first-year students personalized move-in day schedules and instructions for downloading the Tulane Hullabaloo Hello mobile app this morning (Friday, August 9).
Family members may also download the Tulane Hullabaloo Hello mobile app from the App Store or Google Play store to use these helpful family-specific components: Family Resources (Move-In event schedule, Family Newsletter archive, Family Weekend Information), Campus Map, Weather, and more. Look for the app image above.
Before you come to campus for move-in, remind students to:
- Print their check-in pass with their check-in QR code.
- Make a written list of emergency contacts in case their mobile phone is lost or stolen.
- Confirm family members are in the emergency contacts section of their Gibson portal.
-
Download Everbridge, the personal safety app: https://emergencyprep.tulane.edu/everbridge-app.
-
Bring their required original ID documents if they want to be hired for an on campus job. (They can always use our campus FedEx to send them back to you if you don't want them to keep them here all year.)

If you take photos to mark this occasion, use #tulane2028 on social media to share them with our community. Find location suggestions here.
I hope your student's Move-In Day goes smoothly. It's a busy day and it can be an emotional one, so be patient with each other. We can't wait to see you!
Warm regards,

Move-in is a prime opportunity to divert materials from the landfill. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our recycling system because it likely differs from your local recycling service. During move-in, and through the year, Tulane’s uptown campus recycling team collects the following materials in separate streams.
Recycling Streams Collected
-
Cardboard – emptied & flattened
-
Plastic Bottles & Metal Cans – Plastics #1 & #2 & metal cans, emptied
-
Paper – Paper & paperboard (shoeboxes)
-
Glass – Glass is collected at dedicated collection hubs serviced by Glass Half Full. Hubs are located at the recycling stations adjacent to these residential halls: Aron, Decou-Labat, Butler, Josephine Louise, Greenbaum, Monroe, and Sharp.
When in doubt, throw it out. Please do not add these materials to campus recycling collection sites.
-
Plastic bags and other flexible plastic film products
-
Styrofoam
-
Pizza boxes and other soiled cardboard

Tips for Staying Safe in Extreme Heat
|
Our area is experiencing record-setting temperatures and triple-digit heat index values. Tulane's Office of Emergency Preparedness & Response wishes to remind you of the following safety tips to use during your Move-In visit:
-
Stay hydrated: Hydrate often with water or other non-caffeinated beverages. During move-in week, Sunday, August 11 through Saturday, August 17, water stations will be located strategically across the Uptown campus offering iced water. Many buildings also have water fountains and water bottle filling stations.
-
Take breaks: When outside, take frequent breaks in cool, shaded areas, or inside air-conditioned buildings.
-
Dress for the heat: Wear loose, light-colored clothing, especially when working outside. Wear a hat, a cooling towel, and if possible, use a portable fan to help stay cool.
-
Seek help in a medical emergency: If you or someone you see is experiencing heat illness, including symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, please call TUPD at (504) 865-5911. Emergency medical responders will be on-site on the uptown campus during move-in week.
-
Report facilities issues: In sustained extreme heat, our local power utility may temporarily lose power or be unable to provide consistent power, which may impact our elevators and air conditioning systems. If any of our campuses experience a power issue, it may take some time to get all systems fully back online. If you experience a facilities emergency, including an elevator outage, please call (504) 865-5441 or follow the instructions inside the elevator. Less urgent issues may be reported to Facilities Services by submitting a request via Service Wave.

RSVP Reminder: Center for Intercultural Life Orientation & Dinner
|
As part of first-year students' Move-In, the Carolyn Barber Pierre Center for Intercultural Life hosts an orientation program centering students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, and their families. The purpose of the CIL Orientation is to get connected to resources and individuals who can offer support and advice to ensure the students we serve have a successful transition into Tulane. It's an opportunity to hear from campus administrators and staff in the Center for Intercultural Life, including the Office of Multicultural Affairs, The Office for Gender & Sexual Diversity, and Spiritual Life. Our goal is to help every student get access to the tools they need to thrive during their Tulane experience.
The program, including a dinner, will be held on the second floor of the Lavin Bernick Center in the Qatar Ballroom (end of the hall) , from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. on each of the Move-In Days:
Sunday, August 11, 2024, Monday, August 12, 2024, and Tuesday, August 13, 2024. RSVP here for one of the 2024 CIL Student & Family Orientation and Dinner events, if you haven’t done so already.
