| Dear
Friends, |

When my wife and I had our children, we had many choices to make:
do we choose a doctor or midwife to the deliver our children, and
which one? Should we have a home birth or use a hospital? Which
pediatrician should we choose after our children are born?
That's why its hard to imagine what its like to live in rural
Guatemala where there are no doctors. If my wife and I lived there,
we'd have to travel to the nearest city and wait for hours to see a
doctor, who would not speak our language or understand our
culture.
This is why Wuqu' Kawoq's work with Mayan midwives is so
incredibly important. Midwives are professional health workers who
live in the communities that they work with. They speak local Mayan
languages and are experts in traditional Mayan medicinal practices.
This truly makes them the key to better healthcare for the majority
of Guatemalans.
Over the years, WK has worked to make sure our midwife partners
have the training and tools they need. These efforts have been so
effective that now we are growing our midwife partnerships,
expanding to new communities to reach hundreds more people in need.
Of course, to do this we need your help! Beginning at 12:01am on
Tuesday, October 12th, our fundraising campaign kicks off! Our goal
is to raise $15,000 in support of midwives in Guatemala. And the
most exciting part is, any gift you give over $10 will be matched
by Global Giving, from 30% up to 50%!
We'll be sending you a reminder first thing Tuesday morning.
Before then, please take a look at the project's
website, read progress reports from our
Medical Director, or visit the website of one of our midwife
partner associations, ACOTCHI. And please commit to
making a donation on Tuesday.
Sincerely,
Brent Henderson
