Former Lt. Gov. John Sánchez, New Mexico, Named Chair

July 9, 2020 - Washington D.C. -
President Trump surprised America's 60 million Hispanic Americans by issuing a history-making Executive Order to create the White House Hispanic Prosperity Initiative and the President's Advisory Commission on Hispanic Prosperity.
The President met with the Commission and named former Lt. Governor John
Sánchez of New Mexico as Chair.
The President met with Latino leaders then held a press briefing at the White House Rose Garden to introduce the Executive Order. He invited remarks by members of the Commission and Congressman Mike
García (R-CA)..
The historic Prosperity Initiative and Interagency Working Group will be housed in the Department of Education and resourced for an executive director and support staff. It requires all executive departments to participate in the mission of the Executive Order and will provide resources to carry out its mandate.
The President announced his support for school choice, apprenticeships and work-based learning initiatives,
Hispanic Serving Institutions
(HSIs), as well as investment in economically distressed communities and small and minority-owned businesses.
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said,
"
As you have noted, education opens the door to prosperity and opportunity. And Hispanic students, like all students, need to have the freedom and choice to find their education fit."
Secretary DeVos added, "Mr. President, you have led in advancing opportunity for Hispanic students by supporting Hispanic-serving higher-ed institutions, by expanding the opportunities for charter schools, by expanding the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program right here in the district. And there’s still more to do because all Hispanic students across our country need to have the opportunity to choose their right education fit.
"
No President in the country's history has made such a substantive move to help Hispanic Americans achieve their potential with an emphasis on educating youth and promoting economic development supported by key business leaders in the Hispanic community.
The President announced his intent to appoint the following individuals as members of the President's Advisory Commission on Hispanic Prosperity:

- Casandra Lynn García of Texas.
- Mario Rodríguez of California.
- Alfredo Ortiz of Georgia.
- David Olivencia of Indiana.
- Robert I. Unanue of Texas.
- Steve Cortes of Illinois.
- Jesús Márquez of Nevada.
- Chris García of California.
- José Fuentes of Maryland.
- Lourdes Aguirre of Florida.
- Arturo Porzecanski of New York.

Sánchez was elected on the Republican ticket with Gov. Susana
Martínez and served as Lt. Governor of New Mexico in 2010-2018.
He was first elected to public office in 1997 as a councilman in Los Ranchos, New Mexico. He served as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives from 2000 to 2002.
Sánchez grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Founding member and Chairman of Hispanic 100, is a veteran of statewide and local political campaigns, including service as Vice Chairman of the California Republican Party from 2003 to 2005, and President Bush's appointee to the National Hispanic Steering Committee.
Rodriguez served on the transition team for Governor Schwarzenegger and as the California Latino State Chairman for Meg Whitman's 2010 gubernatorial campaign. He is a member of the President's Advisory Commission on Hispanic Prosperity.

Dear President Trump:
Latino Journal believes it is wise to create a President's Advisory Commission on Hispanic Prosperity. This has the potential for Hispanics to fully participate in all of America's opportunities.
One area we believe you can also help with is with the Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked your Administration from dismantling DACA.
We concur with your Advisory Commission appointee and our long-time friend Mario
Rodríguez on DACA. A solution must be found.
Latino Journal request your consideration to direct your Administration to find ways to mainstream DACA individuals in America by designing a pathway to full citizenship. These individuals were young children when brought to this country by their parents and had no choice. They speak English, attend our schools and have assimilated culturally. They are Americans without citizenship. Let us
find a path to fully integrate their talent and contributions into American society. They are educated in America, they love America, they belong in America. Hispanic communities nationwide are looking to you, counting on you and we are ready to serve and support you and our Congressional leaders in creating a win-win approach for integrating DACA youth into a greater America.

The Board of Regents of the University of California announced the appointment of Dr. Michael Drake as its new President. Drake will succeed outgoing President Janet Napolitano on August 1, 2020.
Dr. Drake is the first African American president in the 150 year history of the University of California.
Dr. Drake graduated from Sacramento High School and Sacramento City College before beginning his medical studies at the University of California in San Francisco.
Most recently president of The Ohio State University, Drake was previously chancellor of UC Irvine and UC's system-wide vice president for health affairs including overseeing five medical schools and their hospitals.
