Harder to Find Good Employees to Hire?
With the unemployment rate hovering at 9%, finding a good employee these days is easier than ever, right? Surprisingly that's actually not the case. Managers from a variety of industries including restaurant/hospitality and industrial are reporting higher turnover and more difficulty finding quality people to fill positions. "We're hearing it from our member companies that they are finding it harder and harder to find some of those qualified employees that were so easy to find just a year or two ago," said Michael Harms, senior business analyst at the Dallas-based People Report
Manufacturers are especially worried. At least 600,000 manufacturing jobs are going unfilled nationwide because of a lack of talent, according to estimates in a 2011 study by the Deloitte consulting firm and the Manufacturing Institute. Everyone is after the same type of employee, and even with the high unemployment rate, they are still hard to find. It is all too easy to put bodies into vacant positions and see if they will make it or not, but that approach is very costly, both in recruiting and onboarding costs, as well as the long-term impact it has on your other employees. It is far better to leave a position open, even those critical ones, than to fill it with someone who is not the right person for the job or the organization. Inexpensive recruiting solution Get current employees to help recruit new staff and reward them with cash after an agreed-upon retention period, it works. It especially works well if the employees who are helping you recruit are the type of employee you'd like to have more of. These individuals tend to know and spend time with other model employees (like themselves).
