New Book Just Published

Through Middle Eastern Eyes: A Life of Kenneth E. Bailey, by Michael Parker, was just published.

A Presbyterian missionary for forty years in

the Middle East (1955-1995), Bailey served in Egypt, Lebanon, Israel- Palestine, and Cyprus. He was also a distinguished New Testament scholar, who taught us all the need to view the parables and life of Jesus through the lens of Middle Eastern culture. His ground-breaking interpretations can be found in ten books, including such popular titles as The Cross & the Prodigal (1973/2005), Jesus through Middle Eastern Eyes (2008), and The Good Shepherd (2014). A lucid and fast-paced narrative, the biography provides the context in which Bailey’s insights were formed and developed over the course of a long and often fraught career. Parker’s book is based on

extensive research in the Bailey Papers at the Yale Divinity School library and is now available at Amazon.com. Here’s the link: Through Middle Eastern Eyes: A Life of Kenneth E. Bailey: Parker, Michael: 9798385207794: Amazon.com: Books. Also, check out Parker’s website, which includes several short videos on Bailey’s life and importance as a scholar.

Calling all Pastors, Educators, Youth leaders, Sunday School teachers, Bible study leaders, Christian Education committees:

The challenges facing Christian Education today are more than we’ve ever known in our lifetime. What was once unimaginable must now become imaginable. Emerging trends in educational ministry can help us meet these challenges with vision, understanding, creativity, and agility. Let’s explore together an imaginable mindset through new patterns, models, and approaches in Christian education so that faith formation shapes identity, nurtures meaning-making and engenders faithful living in the world.

Keynote Speaker: Rev. Dr. Rebecca L Davis, Union Presbyterian Seminary

Cost for the event is $30.

Scholarships are available from your Presbytery.

Mother's Day is Coming!

2024 Mother’s Day Offering

On Sunday, May 12, Presbyterian congregations throughout the State of South

Carolina will collect the 70 th annual Mother’s Day Offering for the benefit of

Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina (PCSC). Since the first Mother’s Day

Offering in 1954, the generosity of South Carolina Presbyterians has enabled PCSC

to provide care for residents who, through no fault of their own, have outlived

their life’s savings. This commitment, made 70 years ago, required tremendous

faith, courage and vision. Over the last decade, your generosity has allowed PCSC

to provide an average of $1.2 million in charitable care each year. Your gift,

whether large or small, is vital for the success of this ministry. By honoring our

fathers and mothers in this way, you help ensure that those with need can

continue to call Presbyterian Communities “home.” Thank you for your

generosity.

Trinity Presbytery and Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church enjoy a partnership with the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan. These photographs were taken by Rev. James Zeelu at the Presbyterian Church in Pibor, South Sudan.

Presbyterian College is excited to offer a new program focused on fundraising, philanthropy, stewardship, and other giving initiatives for congregations and other faith-related organizations. PC is proud to partner with the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (Indiana University) to offer the Executive Certificate in Religious Fundraising (ECRF). This unique partnership enables this outstanding course to be offered in the southeast region. The executive certificate program provides the research, tools, and customized training to meet the growing needs of leaders in religious communities and fundraisers of faith-based organizations. The focus of the ECRF is on the cultural, organizational, and philanthropic practices unique to religious institutions. These practices in turn enable donors motivated by spiritual and religious values to experience the joy of generous giving.

This would be an ideal program for clergy or other faith leaders as well as stewardship or advancement staff members in religious communities, schools, or service organizations. From my years of ministry in congregations, I can also see the great value that could come from having members who are heavily involved (or will be in the future) in stewardship or capital campaigns participate in this program. For PC(USA) pastors, there is also a scholarship offered through the Presbyterian Foundation to offset some of the costs of attendance.
