TRANSFORMING LIVES:

THE INSPIRING JOURNEY OF LANORA PURVIS

Our latest newsletter features LANORA PURVIS, a long-standing advocate for domestic violence, sex trafficking, and sexual abuse in the Cleveland Area. Her inspiring story is especially touching in October, recognized as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, as it shows her journey from adversity to ministry founder, demonstrating strength, resilience, and determination.

LaNora's story of transformation began in 2009 when she was on the brink of imprisonment after being charged with her third DWI offense. Desperate, she made a heartfelt plea to God, whom she had never known, to stay with her children. After being released from jail on bond, she was invited by her probation officer to attend a local church, where she discovered her faith and accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior. This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey guided by divine visions and dreams.

LaNora and her husband Howard founded Heaven's Army in 2010 despite having no resources. They transformed a destroyed building into a beautiful community outreach center assisting needy people. Five years later, she established the Home of Amazing Grace, a heaven for women who have suffered from trauma, offering them a space to heal and grow in faith.

Her incredible journey from a troubled past to a ministry founder is a powerful testament to the transformative potential of faith. We hope her inspiring story will encourage others.

Can you tell us more about Heaven's Army and how it helps women who are facing domestic violence?

It is our heart and vision to provide a refuge where women can come, lay their brokenness at the feet of Jesus, encounter the healing love of Father God, and be set free.

We have created a discipleship training program designed to get below the surface of these destructive habits & and choices and allow the Holy Spirit access to deal with them at their roots through a relationship with Jesus Christ and through the power of His Word.

Our program has an 88% success rate. We operate the women’s home as a ministry training academy that provides structure, routine, and accountability, combined with God’s love and presence, sound Biblical teaching, and plenty of opportunities to apply all that our students are learning by selflessly serving the needs of others through various outreaches that benefit our neighbors and the greater community at large.

We are a healing place for women who have come from trauma due to sex trafficking, sexual abuse, domestic violence, dysfunctional families, hopelessness, and self-destruction. A place for women who are seeking freedom and radical life transformation.

What led you to become an advocate for domestic violence awareness, and what motivated you to engage on this topic?

As a previous victim of domestic violence, I have found healing and a desire to help women overcome their past by breaking the victim mentality.

What are some common misconceptions or myths about domestic violence that you'd like to address?

There are several common misconceptions that can impede the path to recovery for victims of domestic violence. These include: "I’ll never find anyone better"; "I can’t make it without him"; "I desire it"; ."It was my fault".

How can individuals and communities support survivors of domestic violence effectively?

Help them become powerful women by truly getting to know them and the root of their problems. Don’t keep them in a place of fear and victim mentality. As a community resource, know who you are referring them to rather than just a phone number on paper.

What other resources or organizations are out there for those who need help or want to get involved in addressing domestic violence?

Here are some resources and organizations that can assist those who need help or want to get involved in addressing domestic violence:

What advice do you have for someone who suspects that a friend or family member may be a victim of domestic violence?

If you suspect that a friend or family member may be a victim of domestic violence, here are some tips to help them:

- Be supportive and let them know that you are there for them.

- Encourage them to seek help and offer to assist in creating a safety plan.

- Listen without judgment and respect their decisions.

- Encourage self-care and offer emotional support.

Is there anything that you would like to add?

It is important to note that the decision to stay in an abusive relationship is not a reflection of weakness or a lack of intelligence; it is a complex and difficult situation where victims may face multiple barriers to leaving.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to why women stay in domestic violence relationships, as the reason can vary greatly from person to person. We become prey and stay in toxic relationships because we have a lack of identity that stems from childhood. We live in a place of fear, low self-esteem, cultural, religious, and societal norms, financial dependency, emotional attachments, false sense of love.
