SAVE THE DATE: FALL ANNUAL MEETING

We will hold a virtual member meeting on Sunday October 27, 2024.

We will update members on TCC activities and finances, elect Board members, be entertained by a lecture, and hopefully enjoy a video house tour. Details to follow.

PATTERN OF THE MONTH

August

Shown is a 7.3 inch plate, “August”, made by John Wood (1872-1910). It is part of a series illustrating the months of the year. For TCC members, it is pattern #10869 in the TCC Database of Patterns and Sources. View larger image. See past Patterns of the Month.

Thanks to Judie Siddall for preparing the "Pattern of the Month."

PUZZLE OF THE MONTH

“Tendril Variation II” Platter

This lovely, unmarked 20 ¾” x 15 ¾” platter is related to the “Tendril” pattern (# 8260) and “Tendril Variation” (# 14658) in the TCC Database. It shares elements with both patterns but does not match either exactly. “Tendril” is attributed to Benjamin Adams, in business 1809–1820, at Greengates, Tunstall, Staffordshire. The “Tendril Variation” in the database is also by an unknown manufacturer. A third related listing in the database (#14836) has the Latin motto "Fortuna Sequatur Ne Nimium" at the center of a round soup plate with the same floral sheet pattern as the others. This variation has been documented with an impressed Spode mark. The database notes of the piece illustrated, “This Copeland version of the original Spode pattern was undoubtedly a replacement piece.” So, it seems this pattern was likely produced by at least three potteries and possibly more. PHOTOS OF THE MONTH

California Transferware Archaeology Collection

A few of the transferware pieces from the collection of the California Department of Parks and Recreation archaeology collection, viewed by TCC members in 2009. We are looking at artifacts from Cooper-Molera Adobe, located in Monterey. The two plates are the iconic Winter View of Pittsfield, Mass ("Pittsfield Elm") pattern, DB Pattern 2994, and a side-wheel steamship bearing the name “Montreal” and it is DB 2800. See larger image. See past Photos of the Month.

Thanks to David Hoexter for preparing the "Photo of the Month."

DISHY NEWS

A Transferware Blog by Judie Siddall

Brick-shaped transferware money boxes

"I have only seen two brick-shaped transferware money boxes. They were probably made for children, and didn't include a hole to remove the money. So, not many survived. One is owned by my friend, Dora. It is printed with five patterns that are also found on nursery plates. The other money box is owned by me". Read more.

Back Together Again – An Overview of the Philadelphia PA 2024 Annual Meeting

by Juliana Falk

It is always a pleasure to gather to discuss transferware with fellow enthusiasts, but it was especially satisfying to do so in person after several years of virtual meetings. FEATURE ARTICLES

Database Discoveries #2, TRANSFERWARE DARNING EGGS by Judie Siddall

A request from Tony Calvin of Cumbria, England about a possible attribution of a jug to the (John) Wilkinson Pottery of Whitehaven, West Cumberland (1820-1867), led to the serendipitous discovery of the uses of the rare egg-shaped transfer printed objects that I have been fascinated by for years. Tony and I shared information about the jug, and thus I learned about the Wilkinson Pottery and its production of transferware eggs. Read this article.

Database Discoveries #17 TRANSFER-PRINTED RICE PLATES FOR THE SOUTH-EAST ASIA MARKET by Connie Rogers

One of the greatest achievements in transfer printing in the last half of the 19th century was led by J. & M. P. Bell of Glasgow, Scotland. The firm was established in 1842 by the two brothers: John and Matthew Perston Bell. They began by producing useful kitchen wares. By the 1860s they were well established, and there was high demand for their decorative and useful pottery. In the 1860s and 1870s there was a large volume of exported ware, from other Scottish potteries as well as Bells, that was sent out to all parts of the world. John Bell became a ship owner and purchased a firm in Rangoon to assist with the continuation of their adventure. Read the article.

LOOKING for a FEW (MORE) DATABASE EDITORS

Looking for anyone with a passion for the beauty and history of transferware who would like to help record lovely old patterns for a worldwide audience. The Database of Patterns and Sources is maintained by a team of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. You could be one of them! We're currently looking for editors in Romantic patterns, Literature and Performing Arts, and Tiles, but let us know your interests and we can find a spot for you. Contact Len at otlink@aol.com for more information!

SEEKING BULLETIN SUBMITTALS

The TCC Bulletin editor seeks submittals to future editions, particularly from first time or occasional authors. We have an extremely knowledgeable member base, yet many of our members seldom or never share their knowledge, at least in printed form. Now is your chance. Bulletin submittals do not need to be extremely technical or lengthy. They just need to be interesting and relate to British transferware! And they need to be accompanied by quality images. We would especially welcome articles from our growing number of archaeologist members.

Don’t fret if you have little experience. We will be pleased to work with you, to formulate your concept and bring your article along. Simply send us your ideas, if that is where you are, or text, even in preliminary form, if you are further along. Please submit in MS Word format, and separately, images in png, pdf or jpeg format. Please do NOT convert to PDF. Don’t worry if this is a problem for you; we’ll work with you to bring your article from preliminary to final, printed, stage, no matter your level of computer and word processes experience. Download the Guidelines.

Suggested topics:

  1. Your favorite transferware piece, either your own or displayed elsewhere (why is it your favorite?, how did you acquire it?, what is the pattern, maker if known?).
  2. What is your favorite place to view transferware: museum? stately home? Historic or archaeological site?
  3. Tell (and show) us your own collection (really good pictures required).
  4. New discoveries.
  5. Archaeological sites: overall summary of the excavation as relates to transferware; discuss a particular pattern or piece; context/importance of the transferware.
  6. In-depth research of a pattern, series, maker.
