Applying to Private Colleges

Considering Applying to a Private College?

Many private colleges and universities utilize a holistic approach to reviewing prospective transfer applicants. This approach usually considers your academics (e.g. GPA, enrollment, rigor of coursework), and personal qualities.

To learn about your personal qualities, universities may require personal essays and letters of recommendation.

You may consider participating in activities such as student government, volunteer experiences, internships, or work experience to enhance your learning and application materials.

For advice on getting a great letter of recommendation, read here

Transfer Alumni Spotlight

Meet Karina Ugalde

In 2022, Karina Ugalde transferred to UC Los Angeles as a Sociology major.

What do you enjoy about your transfer university?

I love the beautiful campus. It has the prettiest study spots. I particularly enjoy the mental challenges. It allows me to test my potential! I've enjoyed making friends and trying new food spots in LA. Most importantly, I've enjoyed being part of clubs and programs that connect me to my culture and allow me to grow as an individual.

What transfer advice would you give to future FC transfer students?

Meet with your counselors at least twice per semester. Utilize to plan out your courses, paying special attention to university requirements. Remember that you are so much more than your grades. While they are important, your personality, experiences, and skills have greater value. Sign up for campus tours, study at coffee shops, care for your mental health, and balance your school/social life. Truly enjoy the process!

We encourage all eligible students to apply for financial aid by submitting a FAFSA or CADAA, whichever is applicable to the student. For assistance, students are welcome to stop by the Financial Aid Computer Lab during their in-person business hours.
