A Message from the Director

Misty Bruckner

Director, Public Policy & Management Center

Mental health is something that is close to my heart, personally, and to the mission of the PPMC. • In the first year of the pandemic, anxiety and depression increased by 25% (WHO, 2022)
  • Mental health issues were reported by employers 6 times more than before the pandemic (Molko, 2022)
  • In one CDC report during the pandemic, 31% of people reported anxiety and depression and 11% reported serious thoughts of suicide in the past 30 days (Gordon, 2021)
  • Only 32.7% of mental health care needed in Kansas can be met, due to a shortage of health professionals (KFF, 2021)

Introducing: The PPMC Training Course Catalog

Most organizations across the country are facing a talent shortage; government organizations are feeling that shortage at a higher level due to difficulty attracting and retaining staff. Organizations need more creative approaches to traditional benefits.

The PPMC knows how important talent is. Providing knowledge is a key ingredient to keeping employees engaged in the organization.

Take a look at the PPMC’s training catalog to see if our programs could help you and your employees. We hope to keep connecting to public entities across the state to conduct professional and personal development.

Don’t see what you’re looking for? Let us know and we’ll come up with something new together. We look forward to working with you!

Women in Public Service

Asian American _ Pacific Islander Heritage Month _1_.png

It's May, which means we're celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM)! Here are a few educational pieces about AAPI history and personal stories:

  • Norman Mineta and His Legacy: An American Story (56 min) This short film is a biography of Norman Mineta, the first Asian American to serve in a presidential cabinet. Mineta, of Japanese ancestry, was imprisoned by the U.S. during WWII and later served as a cabinet secretary for Presidents Clinton and Bush.

  • Beyond Bollywood: This digital storytelling site by Google Arts and Culture recreates key elements of the 2014-2015 National Museum of Natural History exhibit that aims to portray the experience and contributions of Indian Americans in the United States.

While these are important issues to address, I find so many reasons to be filled with hope...
