Traffic Alert: Changes Coming to Rt. 9 Starting Next Week

En español

Beginning next Wednesday, May 29, there will be changes to the traffic pattern on Rt. 9/Broadway south of the Rt. 119 intersection. A $13.9 multi-modal project that began last year will require the installation of a new 16ft wide, 270ft. long pedestrian/bicycle bridge across Interstate 287. This project will take 6 weeks, through mid-July, and will disrupt traffic for both vehicles and pedestrians in that area, but the end result will be wider, safer pedestrian and bicycle access across the bridge.

Please prepare for the following by giving yourself extra time for travel if you must travel in this area during road work hours:

  • Beginning May 29th: New York State Thruway Authority crews will be staging equipment and materials on the west side of the bridge over the New York State Thruway. (See image 1 below.) Four lanes of traffic on Rt. 9 will remain open. Pedestrian access across the bridge will be on the east side, with crossings at the intersection of Rt. 119 and Rt. 9 and at the Tarrytown Honda/Sleepy Hollow Conference Center intersection. There will be no pedestrian crossing at Paulding. (See image 2 below.)

  • Beginning Monday, June 3 between 9:30 am and 3pm on weekdays, there will be one lane in each direction open across the bridge (see image 3 below). The inner left turn lane on Rt. 119 will be closed. The same pedestrian detours as above will apply. It would be advisable to avoid the area during these hours if possible.

  • Beginning Monday, June 3 between 3pm and 9:30am (after road work hours), the traffic pattern will return to four lanes of traffic, two lanes in each direction with equipment staging on the west side of the bridge, and the same pedestrian detours will apply. (image 1 and 2)

Image 1: Beginning May 29, equipment and materials will be staged on the west side of the bridge overpass across I-287 on RT. 9 between Rt. 119 and Paulding. Four lanes f traffic will remain open. A pedestrian detour across the east side of the bridge will remain in place through the duration of the 6-week project (see below). From Monday, June 3, the four-lane traffic pattern will remain in place during non-road work hours, 3pm to 9:30am.

Image 2: The pedestrian detour will allow access on the east side of the bridge, with crossings at the Rt. 119 intersection and at the Tarrytown Honda/Sleepy Hollow Conference Center intersection. The Thruway Authority explored pedestrian access on both sides of the bridge, but determined there was not a safe option given the requirements of the bridge installation. The pedestrian detour will be in place for the duration of the project. This temporary inconvenience will result in wider, safer access for pedestrians and bicyclists through this corridor.

Image 3: Beginning June 3 between 9:30am and 3pm, Rt. 9 between Rt. 119 and Paulding will have one lane open in each direction and the inner left turn lane on Rt. 119 will be closed. The same pedestrian detours will apply. Flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic. Signage will indicate pedestrian crossing opportunities. Avoid this area during road work hours if possible during the six-week project.

Why Is This Happening?!?!

This multi-modal project is accomplishing the following objectives:

  • Extending the side path one mile south to Lyndhurst, creating a wider access point to the OCA for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Installation of a new pedestrian bridge across I-287.
  • Adding a second left turn lane from South Broadway to the southbound Thruway entrance ramp
  • Installation of a traffic signal at Paulding Avenue to make it safer to turn left
  • Beautification of entryway to Paulding Avenue

Later this summer and in the early fall, crews will complete the remaining activities, which include relocating Tarrytown’s water main onto the Route 9 vehicle bridge; repairing and resurfacing Route 9 from Route 119 to just south of Gracemere Lane; restriping the roadway to add the second left turn lane on southbound Route 9; and landscaping at the end of Paulding Avenue.
