SAFETY TIPS OF THE MONTH

Many people rely on propane to power their grills, patio heaters, power generators, and other outdoor appliances. While most people are familiar with 20-pound propane cylinders, you should keep the following safety tips in mind. They will help you learn how to safely transport and store propane cylinders.

When transporting a small propane cylinder:

  • Always store the tank securely in an upright position so it can’t fall, shift, or roll
  • Never leave a propane cylinder in a hot vehicle
  • Head straight to your destination and unload the tank from your vehicle when you arrive

When it’s time to store the propane cylinder:

  • Keep it outdoors in a well-ventilated area
  • Avoid garages and sheds where gas could collect if a valve is accidently left open
  • Choose a dry, flat location out of direct sunlight
  • Keep flammable materials and potential sources of ignition away from the tank

When the tank is not in use, disconnect it and ensure the valve is fully closed.

Whether you are running a portable heater, grilling or powering outdoor equipment, it’s important to remember these simple guidelines to ensure you know how to safely transport and store propane cylinders.

This video from the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) briefly recaps these tips.
