The Town of Penfield is a special place to call home for many reasons, and our amazing parks and recreation opportunities are certainly near the top of the list. July is Park and Recreation Month, and it is the perfect time to highlight Penfield’s parks and recreation programs.
Parks and recreation programs offer so much to our community. They enhance quality of life, foster community, promote health and well-being, and provide a creative outlet for people of all ages. Whether you enjoy a summer concert at Penfield Amphitheater, stroll in one of our parks, or play in our youth sports programs, residents of all ages have access to unique opportunities year-round.
That said, none of this would be possible without the team of professionals in our Parks and Recreation Departments.
Behind the scenes, our Parks Department, led by Tim Masterton, diligently maintains our facilities and is always preparing for what’s next. You’ll likely see the crew getting our baseball and softball fields ready or cleaning up our parks after an event. The parks team gets the job done each day.
Led by Recreation Director Andrew Urckfitz, Penfield Rec serves thousands of people each year through its wide range of programs. From swimming lessons for our youngest residents to our excellent Daytime Education at Recreation programs for our older residents, there is no shortage of opportunities throughout the year. This is especially the case right now with our summer camps happening and hundreds of young campers taking part.
While we have a great foundation, we’re always looking for ways to improve our recreation programming and facilities. As part of this effort, we gathered feedback from the community earlier this year about the future of Penfield Parks and Recreation, including our facilities. Long-range facility plans are being developed using this information, including the potential construction of a new recreation center. I am eager to move this process forward and hope to have updates for you in the coming months.
Additionally, as I am sure many of you know, we’re building a new pickleball and recreation area at Shadow Pines that will include ten pickleball courts, a picnic area, an open-air pavilion, two inclusive playgrounds, restrooms, and a parking area. This project is expected to be completed this fall and will add even recreational opportunities.
I encourage you to take advantage of all we offer, especially during the summer. If you see our parks and recreation team, be sure to tell them thank you as we celebrate Park and Recreation Month.
See you around.
