ALAN FIERS- MAYOR

Well, here it is: Holiday Season again. The Christmas tree is decorated. The Menorah is in place. The Holiday festivities begin today at 6:00 pm with the Christmas Tree Lighting. The remainder of the Holiday schedule is in the newsletter. Make sure to take time to enjoy the season.

The qualifying period for Town Election ended at noon November 28th.  See the Clerk’s report for details on who qualified to run for the two open Commission seats. I was unopposed as Mayor, so I will be your mayor for a while longer. Thank you for your trust and confidence.

As you all are aware, the watermain replacement project has been completed. The road repaving project is underway. Edwards Lane and Bamboo Lane have been repaved and at least from my perspective, it is a pleasure to drive on the new surfaces. The paving will now move on to Inlet Way from the Parkway to Lake Drive. Beyond that the schedule is not yet set. We are pushing to finish up by Christmas, but work may spill over into the New Year for a week or two.

The rebuilding of the Community Center Kitchen is moving ahead at a fast pace. The new electric work and plumbing are set for inspection by the building Official and once this is finished, installation of the new appliances will begin. The goal is to have the renovation completed by December 2oth. Early in the New Year, at an appropriate POA meeting, we plan to dedicate the Kitchen to Randy Frick, the benefactor who donated the money that was used to finance the project.

NOVEMBER COMMISSION MEETING

The main focus of this Commission meeting was the Fiscal Year end 2023 financial report. (The Town operates on a October 1st to 30th September Fiscal Year.)  The year ended with another positive variance to the Budget, meaning our revenue exceeded our expenses. The main source of revenue over budgeted revenue was the interest on the Town’s bank accounts and slightly higher property tax revenue. The positive variance was not as much as in the last three years due to the increased legal spending on the Dish Communication and Inlet property lawsuits. Also, we brought forward several items from the 2024 budget into the 2023 budget.

Overall, you can sleep well: the Town finances are solid and in good shape.

The other item of business was discussion and passing on first reading an Ordinance which prohibits cutting into our roads and street without first obtaining a town permit, and, if cuts into the road are necessary, establishing requirements for repair of the road base and patching the surface. This will help prevent the dips in our roads which results from inadequate patching when cuts and openings are required. The vote was 5-0 in favor. There will only be one Commission meeting in December. The monthly Workshop will be combined with the monthly Commission meeting. The session will be held on December 11th.

And that is a wrap for November 2023.

TREVOR STEEDMAN

PBS FIRE CHIEF

OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT:

Community Risk Reduction:

Thank you to the Palm Beach Shores POA for affording the PBSFD the opportunity to present Fire Extinguisher Selection, Use and Maintenance at their November 6 meeting. This Hands-on training and education opportunity has been presented to community members and our partners in the business community by your PBSFD Firefighters. Please contact the Fire Chief’s Office with any questions regarding this program.

Know Your Zone:

Many residents have commented on the Know Your Zone signs posted in Riviera beach near the entrances to Town. This initiative was met with many questions and concerns from residents. In conversation with Riviera Beach officials, the signs were posted prior to them being able to effectively conduct their related public education and awareness program. To that end, the signs will likely be removed within a few weeks to provide the program a fresh start prior to next hurricane season. For more information on this program, please visit https://www.floridadisaster.org/knowyourzone/

Emergency Alerts: If you haven’t already done so, sign up for alerts - Palm Beach County has an alerting system that is compatible with your mobile devices. PBC DART (Disaster Awareness & Recovery Tool) is a mobile application available for both Apple and Android platforms, used by the public to check for:

  • Evacuation orders and zones
  • Check shelter locations and status.
  • Locate nearby stores on generators.

And provides the users with:

  • Platform to report damage to homes or businesses.
  • Ability to upload pictures of the affected areas.

Alert PBC is Palm Beach County’s Emergency Notification System allowing you to opt in to receive notifications via phone calls, text messaging, email, and more based on locations you care about. You can choose to receive notifications about events that may affect your home, workplace, family’s schools, and more.

More information about PBC DART and Alert PBC is available at

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Lithium Battery Disposal:

The PBSFD in partnership with the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (SWA) have supported a combined initiative for our residents to safely dispose of lithium batteries. The hazards associated with lithium batteries has been outlined in previous newsletters. Now, the end of the energy source’s life cycle is being highlighted as well. Please see the images below for additional information:

Biohazard Disposal:

The PBSFD has accepted drop-offs of small amounts of biohazardous waste from residents for disposal through our contractor. This biohazardous waste is typically in the form of used syringes. To prevent the potential for accidental needle-sticks to our Firefighters, please make sure the used needles are in an approved sharps container. Even capped needles have the tendency to become uncapped in plastic bags or other soft-sided containers. Refrain from disposing of these materials in household trash, dumpsters, or recycling bins. Please help keep our Fire/EMS providers, sanitation workers and neighbors safe by disposing of these items properly.

OCEAN RESCUE:

Beach Safety: Tropical weather systems continue to cause some high / rough surf conditions and prevalence of rip currents. Our Lifeguards want to remind everyone of these dangers. Use caution near the shoreline as beach erosion has created a drop-off and dangerous shorebreaks.

Please use extra caution if you choose to enter the ocean outside of the guarded beach or before/after guarded beach hours. “It’s best to keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard is in the stand”.

Beach Wheelchair:

The Beach Wheelchair is a wonderful mobility asset that helps more people enjoy our beautiful beach. Please see the Lifeguard to sign out the beach wheelchair during guarded beach hours (10 am – 5 pm.)

As always, please reach out with questions or if we can be of any assistance. tsteedman@pbsfire.org or (561) 296-3380

SGT. STEVE LANGEVIN - DISTRICT #20

I hope your Holidays are going well and you can attend the Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, December 1st.

An incident last week reminded me of a program we had for years, and I would like to bring it back. This program would enable us to call someone to assist you in an emergency involving you or your home.

The emergency contact program only requires your name, address, contact phone number, and who you would like us to call in an emergency with phone number. Also, if someone is nearby with a key, please indicate that.

If this is something you believe is beneficial, please email me at langevins@pbso.org or stop by the station Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Another important program is the CodeRed program, which you can find on the town's website or the link below. You can sign yourself up, and I will send an automated message in the event of Hurricanes or other such emergencies.

https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/en-US/BFB7CC4C6C0A

The company we have used for years is Onsolve-Codered. This service was brought over from the 2019 merge and has been paid for by the Sheriff since then.

I highly recommend you take the time to sign up for both these programs. We can get the information to you, and you can be informed in a timely manner.

  • Our bicycle bandit seems to be back; so far (3) three bikes have gone away. The last time this happened, we located and arrested the subject. That subject had a laundry list of theft arrests and is presently out of jail. Please lock up or put bikes away and report anything suspicious, non-emergency 561-844-3456, and 911 in emergencies.

The Marriott Turkey Trot went well; they do this event every year for the Children's Miracle Network. On Thanksgiving morning, we had over 200 Marriott guests run/walk through town.

We will do it again on Christmas Eve morning, running/walking (They will, I will direct traffic) down Ocean Avenue to Inlet Way, Lake Drive to Sandal Lane, and back to the Marriott by Ocean Avenue at 9 am.

The Marine Corp "Toys for Tots" box will also be at the Sheriff's station. I am in the office Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. If you have a toy to drop off, it would be appreciated.

As far as recent arrests, we had to make two. One was for domestic battery in the 100 block of Inlet Way, and the other was also domestic related, in which the charge violated a no-contact order. This was in the 100 Block of Tacoma Lane.

Thanks again, and have the happiest of Holidays.
