March 12, 2024
Dear Staten Island Academy Families,
As you may know, on Monday, April 8, 2024, New York will be experiencing a Total Solar Eclipse. During the afternoon, a total eclipse will encompass the western and northern parts of New York State. In less than 15 minutes, within the window of 3:15 PM to 3:30 PM, the moon will pass between the Earth and Sun, turning day into night for approximately 2 to 4 minutes.
A total solar eclipse is truly a once in a lifetime experience. Occurring in the same place only once every 400 years, New York State will be at the center of it all on the April 8th event.
Please note that the only safe way to look directly at the sun is through special-purpose solar filters, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. We have purchased eclipse glasses for all members of our on-campus community and will distribute them the morning of the eclipse. However, during the afternoon of April 8th, we will limit outside time and instruct our on-campus community about being safe during this experience. It is advisable that our community take caution by wearing the safety glasses when outside between the hours of 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM or avoid being outside during this timeframe. Our Science department will take time in the upcoming days to educate our students and employees on this tremendous experience.
If you want to pick up your child early that day, we ask that you come before 2:35. Please alert the appropriate office well in advance.
Sincerely,
|
