The Torres Shelter is pleased to announce the hiring of Joy Amaro as the agency’s new Executive Director. Ms. Amaro, who possesses a degree in Child Development and Human Resource Management, has worked in the public service arena for 13 years, including as Executive Director of First 5 Glenn County. She brings extensive experience in grant-funded programs to the Torres Shelter and she has a focus on multi-agency collaboration.
“After an extensive and comprehensive search, the Board of Directors of the Torres Community Shelter is thrilled that Joy is joining our team,” said Rich Ober, Board Chair. “The Torres Shelter is poised to enter a new and exciting phase of growth as we continue to strive to get people off the streets and into programs that will move them out of the cycle of homelessness. Joy is the perfect person to lead us into our future,” said Ober.
On her first day at the shelter, Joy said, “I am blessed with the opportunity to work for the Torres Community Shelter. I look forward to serving our wonderful community and embrace the mission and vision of the shelter, while working collaboratively with other service providers towards the greater goal of ending homelessness.

The Torres Shelter, located at 101 Silver Dollar Way, started providing emergency shelter to people experiencing homelessness in 1998. Torres is the largest emergency shelter in the community and the only local year-round shelter where men, women and families with children can check in 365 days a year. Last year alone, Torres services provided a safe and healthy alternative to our streets and creeks for more than 700 people. The fastest growing population at the Shelter continues to be families; last year we served 54 families with children. This means that tonight there will be mothers, fathers, and children who will be fed and housed, rather than spending the night on the streets.
Homelessness, as well as the costs and problems associated with it, continues to grow in Butte County and the City of Chico. In getting and keeping people off the streets, the Torres Shelter is saving the community millions of dollars every year, while improving the lives of shelter guests.
