National Director of Development

Col. Richard Griffith, CAP
Since 1941, our nation has set aside the fourth Thursday of November to give thanks. At this season, giving thanks is frequently followed by giving to others, gifts to friends or to organizations we cherish. My home squadron is something I cherish: memories I have from enduring friendships, successful mission accomplishments, and young people we impacted.

The Field Fundraising page has tools for encouraging gifts to your squadron including Facebook fundraising, Wreaths Across America, volunteer hour grants and many other opportunities.

This holiday season, consider educating your members and supporters on these opportunities. In Fiscal Year 2022, our NHQ office received $476,062 in donations designated for our wings and squadrons. These dollars are important for your work. We know donors enjoy a chance to recognize something they cherish: your squadron.

Email questions to fieldfundraising@gocivilairpatrol.com; a member of our team is ready to help you use these tools for your squadron.
Seeking a Grant?
New Process Requires Grant Review Submission
The NHQ Grants Team has created the following form to assist local units in meeting grant process reporting requirements.

While grants are an attractive form of funding, they frequently come with specific requirements that the recipient must follow. Such requirements can apply to the general operations of the grant, specific compliance rules, monitoring of other parties that may receive resources from the grants, specific time frame, and specialized reporting requirements.

Units must complete this form before submitting a grant. A review and response will be made within 15 business days providing authorization to proceed or specific feedback.

This process became effective October 1, 2022 and was shared at the Summer Command Council. Specific language will be included in the update of Regulation 173-4 (in process).
The Role of the Wing Director of Development

Wing directors of development serve as an advisory resource for local unit fundraising and are responsible for creating a fundraising plan for the wing. They work with wing staff to communicate and educate squadrons about available and approved fundraising programs.
Are You Leaving Money Behind?

How to Engage Your Squadron to use Matching Gifts/Volunteer Hours Grants

$351,547 Raised in Fiscal Year 2022
Did you know? 78% of match-eligible donors have no idea their company offers a matching gifts/volunteer hours grant program?

It only takes seconds to find out if you work for a company that offers grants for volunteer hours or match employee giving. Parents, grandparents, family members, retirees, and members can use this program to benefit your squadron directly.

How do I educate folks on this resource? Share the link below on parent night, squadron functions, or wing/region conferences. When they sign in, ask them if they'd like to see if their employer matches donations or offers grants for their volunteer hours.

Get the word out. Share a success story of how a volunteer hours grant/matching gift benefitted your squadron on your social media/communication platforms.

Funds are used for cadet programs, scholarships, CyberPatriot, Robotics, new member ribbons, squadron utilities and more.

An employer isn't listed? Click here for ways to advocate a program with your employer.
Have you shared the corporate matching link with your members/families?
Yes, thanks for the tips on how to promote this resource.
No, but I plan to share at our next squadron meeting.
Questions from the Field...
Q: Does my wing need to register as a state charity?
A: All charity registrations and renewals are managed by CAP NHQ. You can find more information here. If you are sending out a fundraising letter, you must include the required state disclosure(s) within your appeal.
Q: How do designated donations get to my squadron?
A: When a donor designates a gift to a squadron through a CAP NHQ managed program such as Matching Gifts, Wheels and Wings, Donor Advised Funds or a Donation Link, the donation is processed and sent to NHQ Financial Management for transmittal to the wing banker account.

If you'd like to inquire about the status of a donation, contact your wing administrator first. They will do the research for you and contact NHQ for more information, if needed.
Promote Wings and Wheels Donation Program
Raise More $$ for Your Squadron
All vehicles are considered, running or not, including cars, trucks, trailers, boats, RVs, motorcycles, campers, off-road vehicles, planes, heavy equipment, farm machinery, and most other motorized vehicles.

This summer, a donor gave his RV through the Wings and Wheels Donation program and designated it to cadet programs. After auction, it netted more than $48,000 to support cadet programs. A very generous gift!

Don't miss out on this opportunity. Designated Units/Wings can receive up to 80% of the proceeds for vehicles which net more than $1,000. It is important that the donor chooses where the donation is intended to go, or the Unit/Wing may not receive the credit.
Does your squadron know about CAP's vehicle donation program?
Yes, our squadron has already benefitted. I'd like to share our story.
Yes, I have shared this information with my squadron.
No, I'm just hearing about this program.
