The Quality of Life in Loisaida
|
Since its first publication in 1978, The Quality of Life in Loisaida provide access to important information and current events, as well as artwork and culture in the Lower East Side – written in both English and Spanish!
In 2018 Loisaida, Inc. decided to spearhead a small zine project inspired by the original publications and those of previous years and work with students from institutions like the New York University on what has now become an arts based research project that explores the Loisaida neighborhood, meet its residents, laborers, artists, studies the neighborhood, its families, people, and writes down its current state of character.
As the first reissue to be published and printed since before the COVID-19 pandemic began, the 2021 edition zine is obsessed with questions of the past and the future:
What has been lost?
¿Qué se ha perdido?
What has been learned?
¿Qué se ha aprendido?
What has changed?
¿Qué ha cambiado?
What do they hope and fear for the next phase?
¿Qué nos preocupa y a qué le tememos?

Edited by student Lau Guzmán, a young writer who attends NYU's Gallatin School and hopes to graduate in January 2022 with a concentration in Political Fictions with a minor in Journalism. Lau graduated from an international high school in Bogotá, Colombia in 2017, spent a year backpacking, and lived to propel herself on a rickety scooter through Tompkins Square Park.
Lau's work centers on the relationship of media, politics, and culture and she's excited to learn more about the Lower East Side as the editor of the 2021 edition of Quality of LIfe in Loisaida as a part of NYU Gallatin's Fellowship in Urban Practice.
The Quality of Life in Loisaida zine is FREE in the neighborhood, however you can support this initiative by purchasing a limited edition print for $10. Please call us at (646) 726-4715 or email us at info@loisaida.org for more information.
